What's up everyone? I just recently received a 62' Stratocaster as a gift, and now I'm spending some good quality study time on how to nail SRV's tone. I do realize technique plays a huge part in his tone, but I am curious about his rig, and I've been looking for a great Fender tube amp, because I'm not to impressed with my Marshall Mg dfx, definitly not a good blues feel.

But anyways, I know he is famous for an Ibanez tubescreamer, if anyone could bring me up to date on the exact model he used that would be lovely. :)
Now on the amps, I'm more trying to nail a specific gigs tone, rather then the studio recordings. (Always been a preference of mine..)

I'm mainly going for the Live at the El Mocambo performance. So if anyone could help me on the two amps his using there, I'd be very happy.

P.S. Sorry if these questions sound "stupid" to you older and more experienced players here, as I've only been playing for 8 years, and I'm 15 years old so I might be a bit slow. ;p Thanks everyone!

Howdy! I doubt you'll get anywhere near his tone with your amp. You'll need a tube amp to really reap the benefits of a Tube Screamer. The overdrive will push the front end of a tube amp and give you some nice natural overdrive. Your right, a lot of it is technique. I would work on the licks first, then worry about the tone. People come close, but I've never heard anyone nail it. Some folks think they do, but something's always missing. SRV had the same tone regardless of whether he played his Strats or his Dano guitars.

He used many different amps. Fender Vibroverbs, Twin Reverbs, and Super Reverbs, Bassmans Marshalls you name it.

Here's an interesting link for you.

Good luck on your quest young one. :D

Yep, he had a ton of amps in the studio. The Super Reverb and the Vibroverb were the ones closely associated with him, especially the Super Reverb.Like Supro says , work on his licks first , then the amps.He had a recognisable and strong vibrato. Good luck.

Very interesting, thanks a lot! So my best bet to get close to the tone from the El Mocambo would be a TS9 Tubescreamer, and a 64' vibroverb reissue and eventually a super reverb? Or vise versa?

Personally, I wouldn't go chasing his tone. It will cost you or your folks a lot of money and you'll only be disappointed. You could play his rig and still not sound like him. Try a used DRRI and a TS9. You may be surprised. Remember SRV was seriously influenced by Hendrix and many other great Bluesmen. I would work on creating my own tone and not just be another Stevie ray Vaughanabee.

I agree. As much as i love SRV, its always a smarter thing to try to develop an ear for that tone thats in your head. Its way more fun too.One thing to remember about SRVs tone is he used thick strings, high action and his amps were brutally loud.I know the vibroverbs are quite pricey to find, i think to go with something smaller like the DRRI is a good idea. Its your typical Fender blackface sound and a great foundation for your tone.If you are looking for more of a tweed tone , i prefer the Bassman RI. I bought one used for 350 , but usually you can find one for around 500-600.

Does anyone have any idea what amps his using at the el mocambo place?

Yes, I'm currently working on the technique..but you can only teach yourself so much while wondering if your even practicing the right technique to begin with, it's really hard when your self taught..

Wow, that blues jr. amp sounds pretty great..which any amp probably sounds great compared to a Marshall DFX lol.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should just save up and get the vibroverb reissue or the twin reisse, I watched the demo vids that are available on youtube from Fender, and that amp sounds pretty good too.

The twin is one heavy amp and it is damn loud too . I would start out smaller and try out a bunch of amps first.

I'd go with a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue. You'll thank me later. The lower end Fenders are not really built for the long haul. I have a Twin. It's Heavy and extremely loud. I can't even use it in smaller clubs. It's also one of the cleanest amps in existence. You'll go deaf before you get it to breakup.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking..why not save up and get the best thing I can get and work on my technique, so someday when I figure I need a better amp I already have what I want..

I hear he used a 64 vibroverb a lot, why wouldn't I go with that, or a super reverb? whats the difference between a twin reverb, and a deluxe reverb?
