I just picked up and authenticated a 1947 princeton TV front.
it is all original except the speaker.
I have very little volume.
The speaker is a 16 ohm ??? not sure what make.
I know its way out of spec for this amp, could that cause the loss of volume ???
when I tap the amp or lean it backwards the volume comes up about double but still not where it should be.

I have touched up a few of the tube socket solder joints too.

Next question, if I can't get her up and running myself do you guys have a trustworthy tech that will preserve the original amp as much as possible ???

Thanks

Update.

My gut feels like I just sent my kid off to war !!!

I took it to a local tech who has been a tech since the 1950's

He is really retired, however He lit up like a kid when I called to tell him what I had.

He said a 16 ohm speaker in a 3.2 ohm amp would rob it significanlty of volume.

It may need some resistors and caps too.

I asked him to keep every single original part in a bag for me.

So what do you think ??? should I have just sold it as is to some collector for a huge profit ??? or am I doing the right thing to get her up and playing again ???

All I can say is that the notes I heard coming from this amp were oh so sweet !!!!!

Here's the way I see it. Some day your kids are gonna turn around and show off that 100 year old Fender guitar amp their dad lucked out on. 8)

Thanks doc

Kinda what I was thinking.

So for those of you who are interested, A guy I bump into at auctions says to me, I have this old fender amp I want to sell, want to see it ?

This guy buys up old tube radios and repairs them and says I think its 1940's.

I meet him at the flea market and there on the ground behind his tables is this TV front Princeton with a price tag of $375 on it.

I had $300 in my pocket and he took the offer.

I get it home and its completely legit and has a small piece of masking tape with 47 on it.

The second year of Fender Music, What a blessing !!!!!!

My brother-in-law purchased a home many years ago and among the artifacts in the garage was an Ampeg Rocket which had belonged to the seller's son and which no one had any serious interest in so it remained with the house in the sale. It ultimately was swapped out in the purchase of a Telecaster.

I have one of those AMPEG ROCKETS" but they a were called a REVERB ROCKET !!!!!

They have the exact circuit as a DELUXE REVERB !!!!!

GREAT GREAT GREAT AMPS !

AMPEG is mainly known for there BASS AMPS but in the 60's they were copying FENDER to the point of a LAWSUIT !!!

So if ya find an AMPEG from the 60's BUY IT as it will be about 1/4 the price of a FENDER but have basically the same circuit so you can get near the same sound.

EXCELLENT FINDS FELLA"S !!!!!

The speaker would have been a P8R Jenson, also I don't think they made the Princeton TV front until 48'

I know what your saying, everything I read says 47 would have been a woody still.

However everything on the amp points to 1947 down to the little piece of masking tape with saw tooth ends on both ends that says 47 on it.

Could possible be a very early 48 ???? who knows

I ordered a Chicago vintage 8" Alnico from Weber that should come very close to duplicating the Jensen that it was born with.

My local amp doc still has her and he is trying to keep from replacing anything on her to keep it as original as possible.

I know they are not worth thousands (like they should be) $$$ is not my reason for joyfullness its the awesome tone I got just a little taste of.

The early 48's had a vertical tweed and the latter 48's diagonal. Thats one way of telling.

Bondsman untill you know for sure put a speaker with the lowest resistance you can find, in that amp if you have to play it. Resistance too low isnt good but its still marginaly better on the output than too high.

All the best mate

The weber is a 4 ohm, not exactly the 3.2 ohm of the original but close enough.

I can't believe I took absolutely no pictures of the amp before taking it to Bill, my amp guy and so I can't verify the tweed right now.

anyway, hopefully the weber gets here soon and I'll take it out to Bill and take my digital camera along for a few shots.

Its close to 30 miles one way out to his shop and again the poor guy is retired and has been for like ten years so I don't like to bother him too much.

However the smile on his face when I brought out the Princeton was priceless, he remembered trading one for a bigger stage amp and getting $25.00 trade value for it.

Your fine with the 4ohm speaker. Also you can get the vintage Jenson for about 80.00

I'm really happy with the sound I get from my seymour D. extension cab with a weber vintage alnico 12" I use with some of my other amps.

And hey Fender thought enough of them to put a Weber in their new 57 Champ.

Besides I'm an Indiana boy and so is Weber Speaker Co.

I have heard some folks who like the Italian made Jensens too.
