I got a new 1965 re-issue twin reverb yesterday and I love it, especially with the tube screamer, fuzz face and vox wah in front of it ( :D ).

• The question: I was just wondering whether you need the footswitch for the reverb and vibrato to work? Because when I turn the reverb (or vibrato part) up, nothing really changes apart from the reverb control working as another glorified treble control.

Sorry for bumping this up like a newbie, but do I?
And also, where is the spring reverb in amps?

The reverb should work without the foot switch.

If I understand correctly - unlike a reverb tank - the spring tank is fixed in reverb amps. Check out this youtube vid Effect Lesson Fender Tube Reverb Unit He discusses reverb units in combo amps. Very informative.

Hi JImmy, the reverb needs no switch to operate, the vib does need a switch to operate. If you have no foot switch, the vib can be activated by grounding a RCA plug( strip the insulation to expose the outer shield wire and strip the insulation from the inner core wire, then join the two by twisting the wires together and tape up the junction. This will work until you get a foot switch. For no vib just unplug the RCA plug. As for the reverb just check the connections at the tank and chassis. Are you getting a splash when you rock the amp? Exactly right. A shorted RCA plug works fine for the Vibrato. The reverb works without the footswitch. The footswitch should be readily available if you need one. Reverb is accomplished with a tube/transformer driven low impedance spring reverb tank. I'd check the connections first then the tubes. Be sure all the tubes are properly seated in their sockets. If it's new, take it back and get another one.

I'm not getting a splash when I rock the amp. The actual spring has gone from this amp, so I think I need a completely new reverb system fitted. I'm not 'toooo' bothered because the clean tone from this amp is great, but I feel I'm missing the essence of the amp considering the name of the amp.

Hey Jimmy, if this amp is new, then take Supro's advice, and return it. There's no way you should have any problems at all, and why no foot switch? At and immediately after purchase, it is a reasonable expectation that the amp operates with all functions to your satisfaction! The condition of the amp only matters if you made an agreement with the seller, ie. a used amp. You know what I mean? Oh Yeah, the reverb tank is located on the bottom of the cab, in a tolex envelope. In order to check the plugs at the tank, you'd remove a screw at each end to free the envelope. Carefully remove the tank from the envelope, keeping the upper and lower sections together, as a unit(it's really just a 3-sided metal box with a piece of sturdy cardboard glued to the bottom). Then make sure the plugs are seated and secure.(a twist and light push will do it) Again Jimmy, this should not be something necessary on a new amp! Art

Yes, you do need the footswitch to make the reverb and vibrato work (according to the manual)

The reverb tank is located on the bottom of the amp (inside) enclosed in black plastic.

Good Luck!

So I do need the pedal for the reverb to work?
Cheers

Here is what it says in the manual: G. FOOTSWITCH JACK - Plug-in connection for the
FOOTSWITCH which enables ON/OFF switching of the
VIBRATO and REVERB effects. The VIBRATO effect
will not function without the FOOTSWITCH plugged in.

I guess the reverb might work but I have never tried it without the footswitch.

Do you not have the footswitch?

No. I got it second-hand and he said he don't have the footswitch. The owner prior to me said something about the reverb.

As much as I know its called a 'Twin Reverb', I'm not to hung-up on it not actually having the reverb (really). I'm no surf man and I only usually have the reverb on about 2 on my other amps I'v had. I was thinking about just getting it in pedal-form like the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb.

Oh JImmy, thouht the amp was brand new. They do have a 5-year transferrable warranty, as far as I know. Yeah, you'll need a foot switch if you want the On-Off ability. If all of the mechanical connections are secure, you might want to R&R V-3 and V-4, and see if that helps. I would suspect V-3 because you hear an increase in treble, but you never know. If the amp is off and you rock the cab, can you hear the springs in the reverb tank? ART
