My amp is original, except for tubes. I am going to put in a new speaker ( I think a ragin cagin) and I have pulled the chassis out to examine the inside. ( be careful high voltage).
I do not seen anything leaking, but have read that capacitors need to be replaced after time and use?
Should I go for it and have the "Blackface" mod?

Hi Mac, 35yrs. is a long time to get out of filter caps. But if the amp is quiet enough and you won't be changing any tubes or components, then you could keep cruisin'. The caps may never leak, but they can dry out the dielectric and cause drifts in the capacitance and voltage specs. If you're going to change the speaker, then I would suggest new filter caps and the bias cap. The speaker presents a reactive load to the output trans. and power amp section, thus changing the conditions the amp has been seeing. But again, you could just keep cruisin'. The Princeton Reverb is essentially a Blackface, the only changes you would find are some different component brands, lead dress wiring scenarios, and a 3 prong plug(I think yours should have a 3 prong,if not install one). These amps are real gems! Art

The cap can on a Princeton Reverb is an easy replacement and worth it to keep it safe. Filter cap doesn't affect tone, so not a problem.

I've been happy with a Weber C10Q replacement in my SF Princeton and SF Princeton Reverb. I also had a Deluxe Reverb output transformer added to my PR when I was going over it. I've also found the Mazda NOS 6V6 tubes work great in it.

You may want to try getting a 1x12 or 1x15 extension cabinet - paired with a 1x10, it's a killer combo.

Hey Neo, that ot trans swap is interesting. Did you measure any increase in output wattage? Or were you just going for the larger core tranny? Did you bump up the first filter section? Retubed a couple of Deluxe Reverbs with the Mazda's (although pricey) the players really liked them. ART

Art - just the OT upgrade, which made a noticable difference - louder, more grind - great recording amp and great club amp with a mic or with a 1x12 extension cab I got for it with a Celestion (can't remember which one). Basically had them do the "Under 40 watts of Whoopass" mods from tonequest magazine a few years ago.

the Mazdas have been great, and Mike K at KCANOStubes.com has been always a great help.

Very cool, Neo, seems like a neat idea for the Princeton. Haven't looked at Tonequest for years, but found some good info when I had a subscription. BTW I grew up in the Santa Monica Mtns. We had a boat in King's Harbor for years, used to surf by the north jetty(across from the Com Ed plant), bought my first car on PCH in Redondo(1965 Datsun). Do they still have the best clam chowder out there on the pier? ART

Still pretty good.

Brixton's South Bay on the pier gets great bands from time to time, like Adrian Belew 2 weeks ago and Robben Ford on December 4th.

The article in question is out there via google - I let my Tonequest subscription lapse as well.
