5erdiver,
That's a gorgious looking 79. I never thought I'd see another one that looked as good as mine. When I had the amp recapped last year the tech said it looked as if it was brought up to the present in a time machine it looked that good. Yours if every bit as nice. Keep it running, they're fantastic amps.

Thanks filerj, the tolex has a couple of scuffs on it and the faceplate has some dents where the previous owner pried the grill cloth frame off but that doesn't bother me. A little bit of cosmetic imperfection gives an amp character, a lot gives it mojo. :D I replaced the caps a couple of years ago. They are great amps, and versatile. I also play bass through it, unplug the JBLs and plug a bass cab into it.

Yes, I still remember my fender twin reverb with JBL Speakers and those gigantic "cereal-bowl" sizes magnets on the back of that 102 pound heavy amp. I looked like Chuck Berry doing the duck walk carrying that thing. But, it sure sounded sweet. I bought it in Baumholder, Germany, 8th Infantry Division Artillery in 1977 or 78, and I took it with me to Ft Sill (Lawton) Oklahoma and played in the local honkytonks there in 1979 to 1980. I didn't care what guitar I played, it sounded sweet. I didn't care how loud or how quiet I played, it sounded sweet. I have a couple Fender amps now, a 25R which sounds good, and a 65R that I call my "little twin" because of its loudness. I like them, but that "JBL Twin" ooh. it was good.

I also have heard several good reports about the Weber Californias and their closeness in tonal response to the old JBLs.I have an old CBS Leslie with a JBL K-120 and that speaker can take what any amp can throw at it-just a phenominal speaker-I saw one on ebay a while back that was in need of a recone and they still wanted $400 for it.

The reports are bogus.

The California sounds nothing like a D/K series JBL. How can it? The Weber is a long-throw cone, with a 4-lb ceramic magnet. Contrast that with the JBL's shallow-coupled cone and eleven pounds of rare-earth magnet.

I've listened to them both and I own many original JBL's. The Webers sound good......but not JBL good.

My '66 DR came with an unoriginal K-120,that looked to be a recone,I put a Weber ceramic in it to try and get a more original sounding speaker more like a '60s Jensen....nothing comes close to vintage JBLs,that speaker I had screamed!

I recently purchased (2) JBL E120's from eBAY for $293. (shipping included). 8) I just installed them in my Twin and they made a tremendous difference.
Of course I need a mule to lug this amp around but boy it was worth it!
My amp sounds more like the pre CBS Showman with these bad boys in it.
SOOOOOOO clean!
