I have a Bassman with tube chart stamped PH. The chart is torn and does not show which model. Is there a way I can find out if it is an AA864 or AB165 or AA165 by the date stamp. Serial number is A22624. Also, when did Fender make the change to the AA568? Which is the most desirable?

I can't answer your question,
but I can bore you..

I had a bassman from 66, in 66.
It had twin cabinets, which I tried stacking at first.
Only to discover the vibration to the head was apparently causing
fuises to blow fairly regularly.

So I set them side by side.

Still blew fuses.
Built an ugly padded stand for it, with old peices of foam rubber tubing I copped somewhere.

seemed to work.

I was playing through a Fender VI, six string bass.

I think I paid 1,000.00 for the Head, two cabs, Bass and hardcase.
probably got hit for the strap and cable seperately.

Plug that into guitar cabs and crank it up with guitar through it.
I think they made a great guitar amp.

TWANG
good luck with your question.

Someone will have to check the guts to determine the circuit layout.I've got a AA165 that's to die for. Mike

ph on the tube chart = august 1966 and they were definately using the AB165 circuit ...which one is best ? ...it's personal preference. I have a Nov 1964 bassman AA864 circuit and and a 1966 such as yours and prefer the AB165... it breaks up at a lower volume and really reminds me of an early Marshall sound!

I bought a 4x10 cab and have used it for harp off and on through the years. I had the filter caps replaced as well as tubes.

This thing makes a GREAT harp amp! I'm wanting to overhaul it and somewhere around my piles of junk, I have the original paperwork with schematics. I downloaded the schematics for the AA & AB 165s. I guess I'll take it to someone who can put their eyes on it and help me determine what the slight hum is, scope it and go from there.

Thanks for the replies. As a result of owning several vintage amps, I am trying to econimize by learning to do my own repairs. I think I would be wise to let a real tech do the work. I love my vintage amps but boy, one has to baby them.

In my opinion it's worth the TLC ...That 66 bassman of mine, turned up to anything past 3, just makes the hair on my arms stand up! ( hit that "A" power cord through a 2 or 4 x12" 4 ohm cab... THats Rock-n-Roll!)
