I bought what looked like a 65-66 Tremolux head. It sounded great and it was really really cheap. Under more careful inspection it turns out the amp has 4 5881's and looks like it's a showman chassis. The weird thing is that the chassis and numbers on the trannies all point to 1965 and the chassis looks completely stock. The showman chassis was around 24.5" long and this fits in the tremolux which accomodates a 21.5" wide chassis. It wasn't a plug and play situation, alot of things would have to be modified, Anyone got any ideas about this? The showman has an extra knob compared to the tremolux and this "showman"chassis in my amp has 5 like the tremolux does in the vibrato channel. The amp sounds absolutely killer so it s a keeper. Who would go to all this trouble to create this frankinstein. and why? Weird.

Same here, and yes, pics would help a lot!

I'll post some pics for you. Is there anything in particular you want a shot of?

It is solid state rectified. Also I've found that the Showman, not the Dual Showman, matches the schematic layout for this one. There's no reverb just vibrato on the Showman. What should the transformer numbers be for the Showman? I'll get the transformer serial numbers for you tomorrow after the caps have a chance to discharge so I can safely remove the chassis and take some pictures then. Is there any other head that had a chassis 21.5" wide that could have been modded to become Frankenlux? I can't imagine someone chopping down a Showman head just to fit a Tremolux cabinet.

Stay tuned kiddies.

I've got my pictures on photobucket. Could someone tell me how to post them to this site. Please keep in mind I'm dumber than a caveman when it comes to this so step by step details please.

Meanwhile, the trannie codes are: Smaller black one is #JO22814-606016

Bigger silver tranny is #022889 606-1-09

I hope that helps. iconoclaster- I e-mailed the photos to you.

Go ahead and post the pictures.

Thanks to iconoclaster's excellent analysis, I believe I now know how and why this amp was modified.

The why is that it's an easy and cheap way to go from 35 to 100 watts. Especially if you have transformers from a trashed Showman. He then added two more power tubes in the holes formally used for the rectifier tube and the phase inverter. Adding a solid state rectifier is natural since the Showman is S/S rectified. I can see this being done in the eighties when high power was wanted and before vintage amp prices took off. The amp has been benched at 100watts just like the showman. It is extremely quiet, even at high volume.
