Should I replace the speakers in my 70's Fender Quad? Looking for advice please

I have a 1970's Fender quad that has old EV's that have been in it since the early 80's. At what point should I replace them? I know this amp was abused, overdriven at times, etc. They seem to sound fine...no visible damage to the cones or rubber surrounds. I don't know what I'm missing by having old speakers in this amp.

If the advice is to leave it alone...that's cool.

If the advice is to replace the speakers....what should I be looking at.

It has 4 - 12's

100 watt all tube.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks - Ben

If it sounds fine, it is fine. Let it be and enjoy it.

I suspect you are new to electric guitar amps. Overdriving an amp, even an old one is not considered abuse. You can take every single knob on the control plate and turn it up to 10 (known as "diming" the amp) and wail away and it is still not considered abuse. It may shorten the life of the speakers and possibly the power tubes but these are considered consumables on a tube amp; something that occasionally requires replacing. You will do more abuse to your amp by not properly warming it up and cooling it off if you fail to understand what the standby switch is for.

Also, old speakers do not neccessarily mean you are missing something. Many people say they don't make 'em like they used to anymore. Others say they make 'em better than they used to but the point is being old doesn't mean they're bad.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Even the standby is no big deal. I still have amps that never even had one. It's good to keep the amp warm during a break at a gig. I've never had tubes burn up from not using it "properly".
