Just bought a 1966 champ that was supposed to be all original.

Not so much original.

The switch was junk and took sometime to replace and get going.

The pilot light was missing another small deal now fixed.

however someone put a cheap garbage no name speaker (you can see through the cone) and used a lamp cord as speaker wire.

any way I am going to need a replacement speaker and could use some insight from anyone who has found a good one (replacement speaker).

The thing sounds like a cheap toy amp and the volume is about half what my old silverface Vibro Champ was.

I shure hope a speaker change will make it right !!!!

Thanks for any help you might be able to share.

Look like you bought it on eBay or something.

May I suggest the Jensen Vintage Ceramic series, made in Italy, great sound and does not break the bank. Something like this http://www.jensentone.com/c8r.php

Thanks for the input guys.

I replaced the 6V6 with a Messa B 6V6 and it cam alive !!!!
The power tube had been the original and so hey what can you expect from a 43 year old tube ?

The speaker and speaker wires are still junk and at high volumes sounds more like cows after eating cabbage than music.

Think I'm gonna try the Webber sig8s (mr. webber recomended it).

I'll let ya know.

no sound untill volume passes 3 on the knob ??? cheap speaker or should I try a new 12ax7 too ???

Bondsman you can get loads of life out of old valves. My watkins valves are 50 years old now and still going strong (yes i checked em against new ones)

Ive a soundcity/fane 12" alnico from the late 60's early 70's you can have if you want to pay the shipping mate. Its rated at 14ohm :?

How about some pics of the lovely amp?

Thanks for the offer nikininja
looking for an 8" with 4 ohms

it was the power tube causing a good bit of the trouble.

I'm still on the hunt as ordering a webber directly from them became a circus of un-returned calls and crazy billing on their part.

Does Fender have anything available ??? as an aftermarket speaker ?

Is this of any use?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Weber-8-AlNiCo-Blue-Pup-4-OHM-Speaker-Champ_W0QQitemZ390035639354QQcategoryZ121165QQcmdZViewItem

Seems a reasonable price to me.

Hey Blues,
Your '66 Champ came with a ceramic magnet Oxford. The Weber referred to above on the Bay is a fine speaker indeed. But if you want the original tone - keep an eye out for a vintage, not overly used, Oxford. Not the greatest for dirt - but killer hi-fi sound with the amp at 7.

A local Guitar slinger came to my rescue with an original he pulled from a vintage Champ.

Hurray !!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet tones for sure.

Still chasing my tone a bit, it sounds excellent with a bit of Compression from my Route 66, just clean boost and added sustain, i dont use the overdrive.

I'm going to try a 5751 in V-1 to try to sweeten out the overdrive when it gets past 8 or 9 on the volume.

Man these early Champs are a lot of fun and wow what tone

Had to go with a NOS 12AY7 to get the headroom I was looking for.
now I dont break up bad till 9.5 to 10.

Thats the sound I was looking for !!!!!

I did loose a touch of overall volume but hey its a practice/recording amp.

My 4x10 original Blues Deville can handle any stage work.
