Hi all

I recently started jamming with a new friend. The other day he pulled out an old Princeton Reverb that he had stashed away. It's a Silverface that I assume is early-mid '70s. I have no serial numbers for you. Other than being dirty, it's in good shape--no tears in the grill, with some scuffing of the tolex. Sounds great and everything seems to work.
It has been modded.....someone has installed a master volume (which does work and is kind of cool) and the speaker has been replaced with a JBL 10". Can't tell if any other electonic mods have been done.

Considering that it is no longer in correct vintage condition, how much is it worth? I see vintage ones going for anywhere from $700-over $1000.
How much do these mods detract if any from the value?

Thanks

I was going to say $350 -500 on a real good day depending on whether or not he drilled the chassis for the master volume.

Ya, the master voume knob is between the guitar input and the volume control knob on the face. Must be drilled.

I think it may be worth more that what you have been told.
Was the faceplate really drilled or did they just use the second input hole?
If the he used the second hole it could be brought back to stock spec. and even if it was drilled, a new silver faceplate could be bought to make it stock again.

70's Princeton Reverbs are sky rocketing in price right now.
A clean 70's PR amp is gettin near $1K.

A black face is already over $1K

I wouldn't pay a grand for one, I'd build one first. They're only worth what you're willing to pay. Remember, these were great sounding practice amps. You can't get over a drummer with them unless you mic them. I've had a couple in my day. They were a step up from a Champ Amp. Don't forget to return it to normal and recap it should subtract some from it's value. I think the Princeton is way over hyped. Last year they were cheap on the used market. The hype and the reissue bumped up the price. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine sounding amp, just not worth a grand to me.

Total agreement there. $1000 buys a lot more amp than that.
