I'm about to purchase a 65 RI Twin Reverb, and I'm new to this whole tube thing. I've heard many things about when to use the standby switch (ie. letting it warm up on standby, letting it cool down on standby, not using standby, etc..) and I don't know what to think anymore. Just wondering if someone could help so that I can extend the life of my Amp and tubes to their max.

Thanks
Dennis

Also, I know it's bad for the amp to plug in when it's on, so does flipping it to standby let you plug/unplug guitars from the amp, or do you have to shut it off completely?

Dennis,
Do a quick search on this forum. The topic was discussed in great detail a couple of weeks ago. :D

Standby switches are so that the amp can stay on but your tube filiments run at a lower power, which extends their life.
Rules of standby use:
Use the standby (set to off) when you turn the amp on initially so that the tubes can gradually warm up.
Use it when taking a break in playing (less than 30 minutes).

Use it when shutting the amp off just to make sure that it is in the off position when you turn the amp on the next time. It may actually be better to turn the amp off with the standby on so that the filter caps drain their voltage.

and don't get too strung up about it, no sudden damage will occur if you get it 'wrong' - my deville is doing brilliantly thanks very much in spite of my completely casual attitude to the standby thing, I never used it at all fro the first 5 years. No harm done, only ever needed to change one valve. (Oops - tube :) ).

Nah, like I said, some of my amps don't even have one, Fender included.
Some people think if they don't use it the tubes will explode or something. It's more for convenience so you don't have to wait for the amp to warm up after a short break. Like I said, in 40 years of tube amps and gigging, I've never had a problem because of a standby switch.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Play, have fun and enjoy the amp!
