I agree with Tinker Tech. It could even be a cold solder joiont, especially if this amp has been sitting somewhere and not been used for a few years. Have a tech look it over for you, it should be an inexpensive repair.

Lets start with a simple test. Do the volume and tone controls sound scratchy and noisy as you turn them up and down?
Then you need to clean the potentiometers (controls) with contact cleaner.

This will go a long way to improve the sound of the amp and it may be all that's wrong with your amp. After all- Its 33 years old!

Take it to a repair tech if you don't know what I am talking about.

Good luck,

I recently restored my old Peavey backstage and when I got done there was a constant crackling, kinda like a distortion that could not be cleaned up.

I did some testing, narrowing possibilities, it was not the guitar, the cable, so I knew it was the amp. So I unplugged the speaker and rigged a cable from the speaker wire to a cab and the distortion was gone, so it was not the amp, it was the original speaker. I replaced/upgraded it and my old Peavey never sounded better. Try to narrow it down, it may just be a blown speaker
