I have a 1982 silver face Deluxe Reverb that has the original Jensen speaker and I just put in a new set of GT power tubes. My problem is that I would like to get more of a warm bottom end sound out of this amp, if possible. It has a great surf/country sound but I primarily play jazz and blues.

I've talked to a couple of salesmen that suggest a new speaker and if still not happy then try a recapping kit of some sort.

I am considering a Celestion Green back or Vintage 30, but have also heard good things about hempconed speakers. Weber speakers were also recommended.

I would like to get rid of the earpeircing treble. I understand these amps are designed to sound this way, but I also know that people have done a lot of upgrades to get their own sound. Let me know what you have done to your amps. Let me know what NOT to do.

Thanks for the help. Live long and prosper!

Try a BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer!

You may be quite surprised.

To cut down on the treble on this amp, you might try a beam blocker
From Eminence speakers. It is a small disc that fits in front of the speaker to block out harsh treble freq.

You may also really want to use a closed back cabinet. It will improve low end and a single 12" cab could be used as an extention cab plus you could disconnect the main speaker and just run the cab speaker.

Thanks,

I already have my own designed beamblocker. It works ok but, it's only masking the problem. I have considered an external enclosed cab, but I would like to first try a new speaker. I think I may go with a Weber 50W Ceramic (Alnico too expensive). They say this should give more headroom and thus more bottom end. Anybody out there try Weber speakers? I will check Harmony central too. Thanks. I will let you know what I end up doing.

First get rid of the Groove Tubes. I always found them to be brittle sounding with no character. Some people love GT's, I'm not one of them. Have the bias checked too epically if you just changed the power tubes. I'd do that before the speaker. It may be set a bit cold. I warmed up my 76 Twin and my HRDlx with JJ's. Don't get advise from salesmen. I'm sure he'd be happy to sell you a new speaker. If I remember correctly, these things have a bright cap in them. You could clip it. Look around on the net on how to do it or have a tech do it. A closed back cabinet with a couple of 12's would increase the bottom end too. Just watch the impedance.
