I've recently bought a 1981/82 Fender Twin Reverb Blackface 135 watt. I assume this is a Paul Rivera era Twin Reverb. The amp is absolutely mint..not a scratch anywhere; almost new looking and I only paid $350.oo for it!!! My drummer had it sitting in his closet. The only problem is a slight rattle when I turn it up. If I press down on the top of the amp the noise goes away. Any suggestions?? My second question is; can I run an A/B box from a single guitar into each channel, thereby creating channel switching. I'd like to keep one channel at a higher volume for lead solos than the other. Would this damage the amp at all???

I have to agree. 8) I have a late '70s 135 watt Silverface Twin and it has the sweetest singing tone anyone could want! Mine has one 15"JBL speaker. I have been complimented on my tone many more times than I have been complimented on my playing. Unfortunately that tone doesn't materialize until I turn it up too loud to play in any club. But at some outside festival gigs I have achieved amp tone nirvana. The clean tone sounds great even at living room volume but the singing tone needs volume.

I'm curious what the differences are between your blackface and my silverface.

My amp has a little rattle too at times. I have gone through and tightened up screws and looked for loose components but I think my rattle is probably just tubes and I'm not sure there's anything I can do about that on such a high-powered combo amp.

Eurotubes has a good FAQ about tube rattle issues with amp combos.

Quote:
Tube rattle in combo amps, or torture chambers as I call them, is the biggest problem having to do with tubes that there is…

My rattle seems to be between the amp chassis and the cabinet. I can actually press down on the top of the amp and the rattle goes away?? Guess I need to go inside and try tightening all the screws I find!!

See if your speaker screws are tight, but don't overtighten. My '79 Twin rattled when I got it last year, some of the speaker screws were so loose I could unscrew them with my fingers. The speaker baskets were vibrating on the baffle. Again, be careful when tightening, you don't want to warp the baskets, you'll get voice coil rub.

Regarding the A/B switch questions: I have a late '79/early'80 silverface and I run a Morley a/b switch (normal side with effects, vibrato side straight) and I've had no problems so far. With the Morley I can also blend the two sides, giving me even more tone options.

Funny you bring up the Morley.. I just tried one a couple of weeks ago and it worked great. It gave me the channel switching I was looking for!
