Fender Bassman amps from the 1960's and 1970's are very desirable and collectable amps much valued for their great sound. While fine bass amplifiers, they are actually more valued by guitar players for their great tube distortion. The much more famous Marshall amps were actually derived from the Bassman tube amp design.

These are what I feel are average by age and model :

1962-64 Blonds $730.00 Pre-CBS w/blond tolex
1964/65 Blackface Amp Heads $651.79 Pre-CBS w/black tolex
1966/67 Blackface Amp Heads $536.40 Post-CBS AB165
1968 -70’s Silverface Heads $399.82 Post-CBS w/silverface

Vintage amps and guitars have shrunk a bit lately in light of overall economic conditions. Once the picture clears you may be able to add up to 30% to the current prices on vintage. The 1966 and 1967 black faced amps are nothing to be afraid of , even if not officially " Pre'CBS". The "pre-CBS" status of the '65's and older is built into the higher pricing of those amps, but from a sonic point of view, the AB165 circuit remained alive and well in those few later years, and sounded fabulous!

Agreed. I had a 67, bought used around 69 (with the 2 X 12 cab) and I used it as my primary amp for the next 7 years. Great sound with guitar -- my band did mostly covers and blues-rock and the Bassman was perfect if not incredibly "rock loud."

But I also used it as a bass amp for some side jazz trio projects and it sounded good there too.

No maintenance issues other than normal occasional tube changes. I also know the guy I sold it to in 77 was still using it a couple of years later when I left town.

My Bassman experience goes back to about 1984 when I picked one up as a "practice amp" so I wouldn't have to haul around my 600 watt bi-amped monster (remember those days?)
A friend had a Blackface (ab165) with a 2-15 cab he cut loose to me.

The bi-amp stuff is now gone, but the Bassman is still around. Really, save for holocaust in personal finance, I expect it to be around as long as I am.

These really haven't seemed to run-away in value like the smaller Blackface amps or Tweeds, and I tend to believe their value as a player is worth more that what you can get out of them right now.
They are (and were) a marginal "bass" amp (but they can cover you is a small club).
They really are a great guitar amp though.
I recently had a side-seat at a fairly big-name show, and while a Marshall full-stack was the front amp, the guitarist looked to be plumbing his clean sound through a Bassman head on a half-stack behind his "show" amp.
Nuff said.

Love my 65 Bassman. Takes pedals well and is one loud mother. I jumper my channels for more sonic control. Strat-Blackface Amp-Tubescreamer=tonal bliss 8) Mike
