hi ,i have a question about my 59 bassman. It has some plastic insulated wiring from the transformers and tube sockets.i have been told it should all be cloth insulated to be original.the transformers have the codes 45249 and 8087 stamped. My question is do you think the amp has been rewired and does this hurt the value of the amp very much. It absolutely plays great! thanks

is your bassman actually from 1959 or is it a reissue?

if it is actually a vintage amp, then it seems very much that your transformers have been changed at some point.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It's a real 59 not a RI. I kinda figured after 50 years its probably had some work along the way.
It amazes me how much of it is original. most of the newer ,other model amps i own have had more work. What confused me is the numbers on the transformers, do you knbow if there is a way to date those or are they just model #'s.

you can date them by the numbers.

My '58 has 8087 on the power transformer, stamped in silver. I called Fender right after they re-issued th Bassman and talked with John Fouch, who had been there since the late '50s and when I gave him that number, he said, "boy, you do hand an old one!". The other number sounds familiar but I can't see the other transformer to verify that it's in the same range. Mine has plastic insulation and is original to the amp and I have had mine since about '79.

I have seen very old transformers with plastic insulated wiring. It's just not very common. Look at the solder joints where the leads from the transformer connect to tube sockets, etc. and see if they look like all the other joints in the amp. That could help determine if the transformer has been replaced. Here is a link to a site that explains the usual code found on transformers and others parts, even though your transformer doesn't seem to follow this usual code. http://users.arczip.com/rmcgarra2/xstrcode.html
