I have 2 Twins, both '72 models (Serial A43560 and A50259). Bought one new in'72, and was given the other around 2000. Toured the world, stacked 'em, played them side by side, put them through their paces, and they performed magnificently, and today ... like me ... they're old, shop worn and a little tired. I'm about to turn 70 and have gone sedately solo acoustic, so ... thinning the herd and cleaning out the music room, they need to be sold off. I took them all apart, half a bottle of DE-OX-IT in each, pots, input jacks, switches, tube sockets, ... they're now cleaned up nice. Turn them on, warm them, up ... all good. Plug in my Strat and ... clean Fender tones, but NOT as much volume as I remember. Master to 10, channel to 3-4 before it gets loud. I used to remember that being 1-2. What should I check ... tubes, caps, why aren't they as loud as I remember?

Some basic voltage checks of the power supply are usually quite revealing. As an example, a low B+ means your power tubes are likely starving for voltage. And if neither amp has ever been re-capped it's nigh past time for those electrolytics to be replaced. A new matched quartet of 6L6GC's for each might not be a bad idea. The pre-amp bottles may be tired as well. For a Twin Reverb or Showman I usually budget $200 to $250 for a comprehensive overhaul.

Amps fail. The odds of any one failure over a certain time period are reasonable. They do it all the time. But the odds of two identical failures in the same time period? They go up astronomically.
