I got a Showman Reverb Amp head from a local guitar shop a few years ago and can't seem to find anything about it anywhere. I've been told it's either a '67 or a '68 but nobody seems to know for sure.

It's a TFL 5000D silverface model but is only labeled "Showman Reverb Amp," not "Dual." It's in a "big box" head form, has the metal ringed silver with blue stripe cloth on the front and the metal Fender logo plate with a tail. Also it had the old style two-prong plug in.

The old tech I know that cleaned it up for me said he thought it might be some oddball from when Fender was first changing to silverface but wasn't sure because he'd never seen one exactly like it before.

Does anyone have any info on this head? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Look at the ampwares The Fender Amp Field Guide - search for Showman

http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/index.html - photos and specs are available.

Thanks for the link that site is great!

Well, mine looks exactly like the '69 dual showman reverb that it has pictured. But mine is just a showman reverb amp, not "dual," even though it has the same model number. I'm just trying to find out anything specific about this specific amp, though its helpful to see amps that are close. The ampwares site didn't have any reference to the specific model I have.

Google is your friend.

Here are a couple of more links:

First, the scan of a Fender catalog page describing the amp. Also a link to a scan of the photo of the amp.

http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/fender68p30.php

Next up, a collection of amp schematics.

http://www.schematicheaven.com/fender.htm

It's all I can do. Hope it helps. Maybe someone who owns your amp or another Showman will see your request.

If your amp has the aluminum binding frame around the grill cloth of the head and the speaker cabinet, then your amp is a 1968 model. This was the only year that Fender used that binding around the grill cloth.
In 1969, they used the same grill cloth, but no binding, for their top of the line amps back in the day, which was the silver grill cloth accented with what we referred to as Electric Blue threads, This would be a dark.(almost Navy Blue) colored thread that would be very easy to see. Later amps had the silver grill cloth but with a Turquoise colored thread, that faded rather quickly and turned to grey.

A few other ways to approximate the year of manufacture of your amp is to compare the EIA codes on the transformers. They should give you an approximate date of manufacturing within a 2-3 month period.
The same EIA codes can be found stamped on the basket of the speakers used with the amps. (Provided you have the original speaker cabinet the amp came with.)

I hope that helps,

The only difference between Showman amps and Dual Showmans is the cabinet that the amp was paired with. Showmans had the single 15 cabinet while Dual Showmans had a 2x15 speaker cabinet.
