Hello...
Has anyone had the opportunity to play through a Black Face Fender amp and directly compare it to the same model of Silver Face amp...Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb...even a Black Face Showman compared to a Silver Face TFL5000D (not counting the Reverb) etc?
If so...do the two really sound noticeably different, if so...in what ways?

Thanks,

RB3988

Some Silverface, the first one, are blackface, same circuit same parts, only Silverface faceplate.

For the purist ( and most people ) all blackface sound better than later Silverface amps. ( '68 to '75 ? )
Many later Silverface use different circuits and parts.

IMO most ( if not all) Silverface amps are all great amp if you look at cheap stuff made today.
These point to point amps will last forever with minimum service.

About the TFL5000D, I don't know first time I see one yesterday on Facebook.
IMO you can find a Blackface showman head for "cheap"
This TLF is too expensive.

Update;
I write " you can find blackface Bassman head for "cheap"
I should write Showman head for " cheap " not Bassman.

There is no blackface equivalent to a TFL5000D; its closest relative is the Twin Reverb combo, specifically those silverface amps using the AC568 circuit or later revisions.

TFL refers to the teflon type of insulation on the wire in the chassis. It was new back then and very trendy. Its a Bi*** to strip though.
The Silverface amps that you speak of have larger transformers than the Blackface predecessors. These produced more power. This added subsonic response that makes it sound like a wet blanket thrown over the speaker

Excuse me but the first Showman Reverb that I had the opportunity to examine occurred in 1969 (the amp was the AA768 circuit) and aside from the neoprene insulation of the P/T wires, the remainder of the wiring was of the cloth push-back type. I found a similar situation with a 1969 Bandmaster Reverb (also marked as a "TFL" model) a few years later. I doubt that the TFL designation has anything to do with teflon.
