Is it ok to use a 6v led bulb as a vintage Fender amp pilot light? A while back I was wondering why those blue pilot light jewels you can get don't look blue on the amp. I heard someplace it was because the light the incandescent bulb gives off makes it look purple/clear/ugy. So, I got a white led bulb, and sure enough the jewel is bright blue! Looks great, but is it ok to use that kind of bulb in the amp?

No problem to use a LED as pilot.

Do you have a link for this LED ?

There seem to be a number of these kinds of things things around - some give off different color light which would be fun to play with!

This one is a direct replacement :

Amp pilot lamp is a 6.3 volts, on vintage amp voltage could be more than 6.3 with modern wall outlet voltage.
What will happen to a 6 volts LED ?

Good question - what will happen to a 6v LED when it has 6.3v going into it?

 I heard that too much voltage can turn an led into a ded ( dark emitting diode - pronounced dead ) or even an sed - smoke emitting diode

So whats the actual voltage the lamp is seeing?
You said, "sure enough the jewel is bright blue!" indication of over volts perhaps.
Remove the bulb while the amp is on, insert voltage meter black to ground(faceplate or back of chassis) red to hot. Its not rocket science.

btw, I just discovered that those #47 6.3v bulbs are pretty common in (of all things) pinball machines. I guess while we're messing with our vintage guitars and amps, other folks are messing with vintage pinball machines! Anyways, those bulbs are pretty easy to find on the internet - incandescent and led - every color of the rainbow
