I’ve been using a 1971 Bassman 50 head and a 4x10 Marshal cabinet as my go to guitar rig since the late 80’s. Funk, classic rock and blues. My new band likes playing metal and so do I for that matter. My question; is it possible to get that Metalica sound with my rig before I start spending money chasing down that tone with pedals.

I think you'll need some carefully selected pedals. There's no way that I know of to get that multiple gain-stage, saturated drive from any of Leo's designs without some outboard "assistance". There are plenty of stomp boxes to choose from, I'm sure it won't take you long to develop a credible signal chain.
