Yep,that's some shoddy repair work there, wonder what else has been done.
I really hate it when a hack gets ahold of a vintage piece of gear, there's so many people who claim to be "techs" and music store owners have some of the worst ones out there.

They oughta give the knuckle-draggers at GC a blue ribbon!

I wouldn't trust those retards to repair a footswitch.

I wouldn't tar all music stores with the same brush...

while I wouldn't take my amps to a GC or Sam Ash, my local guitar store has been nothing but spot on fixing my Bandmaster (and you all remember what a mess that was), my Princeton Reverb, and even the preamp for a Farfisa Compact Duo.

Pays to check around, and forums like this definitely help to let people know good places to buy gear and those to avoid...

If you haven't, go to amp wares.com and you can download schematics for your Princeton Reverb - may be helpful to give to the amp tech. If he says "already have them," or "I'm taking it back to stock," great. If he says, "I can mod this into a mini Marshall" run away.

Good luck.

I don't rely on music stores around here in the Nashville area.I have a very good friend who can do what I need when it gets too technical and I try to learn what I can because he is 73 and in bad health.
In the Nashville area there are some premier amp techs, who do work for the rich and famous along with the rest of the gang,(like me),some are very pricey but they're good at what they do,and just recently I came across a guitar tech who works out of his home.I took my Strat with the 6105 speedbump frets that I could no longer stand and he did a great job lowering and recrowning them...they are perfect! The guitar is setup better than I have ever gotten them and I've been setting mine up for 40 years...I mean the guy has got the gift. :D...he does work for many guitarists who play in front of thousands at their shows.
I always like to meet someone who has taken their craft to a level that I consider a craftsman,it's getting to be more rare nowadays since the 'net has so many people thinking they can follow the directions and do "tech work".

Glad you found some good techs for amps and guitars - once you find them, you don't want to ever go to anyone else.

Contrast this with the horrid mess someone has made of yours. It'll be easy enough to unfuck by someone who knows what they're doing but my next thought would be, what other foolhardy "mods" were done?

Hi Arjay

OK, I see what you mean. It's more than just a few caps replaced. Well, I think I'll just give it a try, already told my Fender tech. We'll put it back into a more original state.

The transformers say 606-6-39 and 606-7-15. So I guess it would be from 1966/67. So I suppose it's the AA164 circuit diagram? Doesn't look like more than 2-3 hours of work, or what's your guess?

Thanks for your help

David

You can buy the correct 20/20/20/20 - 450VDC filter cap can from a number of different sources. I've also seen them available on Ebay -- around $80 IIRC.

If you can post some better pics of the amp we'll all be better able to assess its condition and help with a proper restoration.

Best of luck

Hello Arjay

Thanks a bunch. The amp will arrive to my place in a few days. I'll take better pics and follow your advice.

I mean ... that was one of the reasons why I wasn't worried about buying this amp. Any mess can easily be undone. I only hope he didn't mess with the speaker.

Cheers

David

A speaker would actually be the least of your worries -- there are plenty of period-correct Jensens and Oxfords available, and they're easily and cheaply refurbishable (if need be).

Exactly! I usually check them out and find out as much as I can before letting them do much of anything,I just drew the line on the fret job,I wanted a pro to do it and I'm glad he did.
