Nice Princeton. How does it sound? You said it was modded, what was done? The Fender Logo on the front is not original but looks great.

Looks good but how did they add the "pull boost" to the front panel, that looks better than a label....lots of modded Princetons out there, some really scream.

Lots of us remember the days when a kid could walk into a shop with a hard earned summer's wages of $150 and walk out with an amp that weighed more than he did. She's survived college, dozens of moves, marriages, kids, etc. Someday hope a grandkid will love her as much as I do.

Pull-boost and MV. Interesting. I don't think I've seen any Princeton with those features. Though, I'm not too familiar with the ones made post 1980's.

Be interesting to see a photo of the guts. Pretty PLEEEZE!

Is 1981 really vintage  Anywho, I've never posted a pic of this 81 Princeton Reverb. I know she is one of the least desirable dolls, but if you just forgive her for the boost, and never touch it, she's not bad. I picked her up just a few years ago for a lot less than a new Blues Jr. I have posted the 65 Tremolux a few times. Be still my beating heart.

Nothing wrong with a late silverface PR, Garry......nothing at all.

Here's my 1980 non-verb Princeton......

World's loudest 12-watt amp.

Good question!

My first-year re-issue Deluxe Reverb is now some eighteen years old. By "modern amp" standards it'll qualify for Social Security about the same time as me.

Nothing wrong at all with the pull boost Princetons - I have one and as long as you leave that awful pull boost alone, you're fine.

As to whomever molested a brown face Princeton with a pull boost and a master volume and probably disconnected one of the great sounded tremolos out there - there's a special place in hell for you. I know to each his own, but if you want to mod an amp, screw around on a late 70's silver face!!!

Re the modded Brown Princeton
How does it sound ? Well it sounds great to me . Sound is so subjective .
I have only had the amp for a short time and it is currently at the shop being gone over ,tidied up and made safe etc.
I will post some pix of the insides when I get it back .
The most curious thing is the face plate . It does not look to have been tampered with or changed at all , so how do I account for the pull boost or the master volume ? The guy must have had that face plate made up .
Is the Fender badge not the correct one for that amp ? Not that I am worried , the thing is so far from original now anyway .

To all the "original at all cost" nazis out there : get over it .
A lot of these mods happened years ago when originality {nostalgia} was not so fashionable , in fact it was the done thing to "hot things up". Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't .
BTW I am really enjoying all the great pix on this thread , love the Princeton "Stack"!

I'm definitely not an "original at all costs" guy if you've read any of my posts. My 77 Princeton Reverb was heavily modded, and Fender never made a 65 Bandmaster Combo. I've changed the power cord and filter caps and speakers on all my amps. Bigger power transformer for my pull boost PR? Why not? No one will care about modding a Silverface pull boost.

It's great that you like it; the concern is that there are very few brown face Princetons left on the planet; it's a different circuit than the blackface or silver face amps (including the tremolo) and as such sounds amazing when stock.

If people want an amp to sound like a different amp great, but it's always easier to just buy that other amp instead.

I'd ask your guy who's going over it what he thinks; if you really want the master volume, you may still be able to get it and install a push-pull in the tremolo hole to switch in/out the tremolo (taking it out of the circuit was done to try and add more gain). If you haven't heard a brown face tremolo, you're in for a treat as it uses one of the power tubes, unique to the brown face era.

Fender logo - brownface Princetons didn't come with one, although that flat logo style is correct for brown face, as is the brown Tolex and wheat colored grille.

Someone's definitely silkscreened a new faceplate, as the Brownface controls were L-R Volume, Tone, Speed, Intensity.

The faceplate font is also off from the standard Fender faceplate font (see in this picture here. http://media.photobucket.com/image/brow ... G_0775.jpg

Would be interesting to see what transformers are in there as well as speakers and circuit - more for curiosity's sake than anytime. May be an original 6G2 circuit, or someone may have decided they really like the look (can't blame them). If you snap pictures of the back chassis and the transformers, we can help date it for you.

Bottom line - your amp is your amp, and you're free to do what you would like. I've seen a lot of hack jobs passed off as mods on otherwise fine vintage amps that promised to make one amp into another and then made it sound worse. Glad you're happy with the sound as is.

Correct.

During the brownface era, none of the smaller combos in the pecking order received the grill logo. One had to step up to one of the "professional series" Fenders to rate a company ID on the front of the amp. These included the 2 x 10 Super, 3 x 10 Bandmaster, 4 x 10 Concert, 1 x 15 Pro, and 1 x 15 Vibrasonic. This protocol continued into the early blackface era as well -- it wasn't until the spring of 1965 when the "student" model combos finally received the logo (roughly right around the same time that the supply of FEIC-marked front panels was finally exhausted).
