Hi all,
i just got hold of a second hand fender champ, ive been collecting a few champs lately and thought id get a red knob champ 12. i was expecting a really boring sounding amp, because of the way they get slagged off on the internet etc.
when i got it i was amazed at how good it sounded!
im a big led zeppelin fan ,enough anyway to know jimmy page didnt always wheel a marshal stack into the studio, a lot was done on a small supro with 2 x 6l6 power tubes, ..now u know where im going...yes with this amp and a CHAMBERED les paul, i got that tasty sound he got on most of his lead stuff, not perfect , but much closer than a marshall, i was disapointed at the sound from chambered les paul until i plugged it into a super champ, ... makes a solid les paul sound flat!
anyway , this amp rocks and i cant see why it copped so much flak, people either love them or hate them it seems..... I love them!

just as a note that i forgot to mention, theres one criticism of champ 12s that i agree with, and thats the touchiness of the gain knob, i put mine on about 2.5 and when i tried to go back to that setting i found it hard to dial in again. i read theres a mod to swap this pot for a less abrupt 250k? pot. this will b one i will do for sure,
....Long live the Fender Champ!!!

FMIC's red-knob models of the late '80s got a bad rap primarily because of their non-traditional cosmetics. Fender was still assembling a pretty solid chassis back then and by and large, these amps were just as reliable as their older brethren. If the rouge-colored controls and the graphic gray grill cloth don't nauseate you then enjoy your new amp for its own sonic merits.

This thread might get more attention in the "Modern Guitar Amplifiers" section of the forum. I keep hearing good things about those red knob models. Consensus seems to be that they are pretty bullet-proof. How do these compare to a Supersonic? Is the gain similar?

I would say these have a little less gain than a Supersonic. Good solid Fender tones, and some edginess especially with a humbucker as the OP states.

But a helluva lot better S/N ratio.
