I’ll start this off by stating I dislike the reverb/tremolo pedal on my DR (~1980). The switches are too close together and the cable is too short for my liking. As such I plan on making a new footswitch in a slightly larger box to create a little more space between the switches and add some LEDs (with a 9v battery). I know the LEDs are not necessary but what guy doesn’t like cool lights and shiny things? I do!

This planned project has brought me here in hopes of getting a few questions answered.

1. Are there any issues with changing the RCA inputs to ¼” on the amp? Since my new pedal will simply be two on/off switches in one box (2 switches/2 outputs/2 LEDs), changing to ¼” jacks will allow me to use the same pedal on my Mesa Boogie Rectoverb 25 to switch channels and toggle the reverb on and off. In effect (no pun intended) 1 less pedal to switch out on my pedalboard when switching amps.

2. If there are no known issues doing this, can anyone provide instructions or point me to a video on performing this mod? I’ve done a few different searches to no avail. I’m no electrical engineer but I have some basic knowledge in soldering and electronics. I’ve successfully replaced all the caps in this amp (with your guys help) as well as guitar pickups, jacks, switches etc. so I am confident I can do this with the right guidance/instructions.

Thanks in advance.

Answer

1- No, a jack is a ....jack
You will need to drill a bigger hole :(
Is there a room inside the chassis for a longer jack ? Post picture

2 - Picture needed

Yes the Mesa just uses an on off switch. I am under the assumption the 1/4 system would be more durable? I can try and post pics this weekend.

No more durable.

If you want to put 1/4 jack, use only those made by Switchcraft, other are very cheap.
All good amps and guitars use Switchcraft jack and plug

If there's room inside the chassis it's easy peasy and reversible, both require a 3/8" diameter hole. Just make sure you drain off the DC before sticking your hands in there.

Make a two 3/8" hole and it is reversible...

Explain me how.

He's saying the RCA jacks are already mounted in 3/8" holes, and you can simply remove the RCA jacks and replace them with phone plugs, using the existing holes.

Edited to add: I don't personally know for sure if the existing holes are big enough.

But easy enough for the OP to measure the holes on his amp.

And unless the amp has some extensive, bizarre/uncommon mods, there's tons of room for phone jacks.

Here is a pic of the jacks. Looks like there is plenty of room.

If this is more work than necessary (or no benefit to doing it) then I am fully open to skipping the jack swap idea and just building a new pedal with battery powered LEDs. I found the following diagram this morning. Is anyone familiar enough with the DR to know if this would work?

Use only a single ground wire for both switches to the amp. Two ground wires may cause a ground loop hum.

+1

The reverb switch cable should be shielded, to avoid inducing hum into the reverb recovery tube circuit.

The Fender standard footswitch cable is 3 conductors, a shield, one conductor inside the shield, and one conductor outside the shield.

I'd forget about the 1/4 phone plug conversion, regardless of the necessary panel cutout size required. I'd also forget about trying to use the same switch for the Mesa, unless you can post a schematic for the Rectoverb 25, and the Mesa footswitch for the channel switching footswitch jack.

<edit>

Just out of curiosity, how often do you switch reverb on or off mid-song? I can understand tremolo or channel switching.

I am abandoning that idea but do want to make a "better" footswitch.

Will the mogami 2582 wire work? Seems inexpensive enough.

I don't but I prefer the ability to turn it off an on at my board vs. walking back to the amp. This is more important on my Mesa Boogie because the reverb knobs are on the back of the amp.

Just to prove a point - no drilling required - Switchcraft jack - USA threads.

You can always tell a jarhead......

For the record, I found the same situation when exchanging the RCA phono jack speaker output on my Bronco Amp for a ¼-inch phone jack -- an exact drop-in fit.
