I have a '59 Fender Deluxe tweed amp. I don't think it has ever been serviced. I did clean the pots and switches and removed the capacitor used as a ground and replaced the original power cord with a 3 prong grounded cord. It is in great shape visually and it sounds great generally.

I bought a couple of cheap effects pedals; an overdrive pedal and a chorus pedal. The overdrive pedal sounds fine, but the chorus pedal has a loud buzz. I tried different cables to no effect. I just now realized that I only tried it on one of the input jacks. Anyway, I took the pedal to the local music shop and tried it on one of their amps and it sounds great. How can I troubleshoot this issue? Any ideas? I live in a small town and there are no electronics repair shops within 3 hours.

Any help is appreciated!

JB

'59 Fender Deluxe tweed amp : $5 K on E-Bay

Did you try your chorus pedals with battery or cheap Wallwart power supply ?
Did you use guitar cable ; it is a must.

Is the amp sound ok with guitar only ? You just talk about a test with overdrive pedal

Yes, I used guitar cables. With the pedal plugged in the buzz is very loud. I thought the problem was the pedal so I took it to the local guitar shop and plugged the pedal in to one of their amps. No noise. So I'm assuming that the pedal is somehow exacerbating Whatever the problem is in the amp. Does this make sense? I plugged in an overdrive pedal and the buzz is there, but not as badly.

I have turned the amp on with nothing plugged in and I can hear the buzz with the volume turned all the way down. The buzz gets louder as I turn up the volume. Because of this I believe that the issue is probably in the preamp tubes. I have purchased a matched pair of Tung-Sol 12AX7 tubes. They are arriving today. I don't know if the amp has ever been serviced or repaired.
I'm not sure how to attach photos. I'm going to try to attach some pictures of the guts of the amp. I will also try to post a front side and rear photo, just for kicks.

Thanks,

Power cable ground look not at the chassis ground , the green wire.
Ground switch must not be used / wired.

You may need to replace filter caps. Buy only the best one. F&T or Sprague Atom

If your green wire from the power cable is going to the screw lug of the power transformer, you're probably ok.

But there are definitely signs of fluid leakage and venting on the power supply caps.

I'd say a cap job is definitely in order.

And to echo Stratele52, you have an amp worth a lot of money, make sure the correct fuse is in it.

And welcome to the forum!

I agree with Vinyl, the electrolytic caps show their age. Pimples and leaks onto the paper covers. I'd use F&T, same mfd and voltage ratings.

Also, I'd have those Astron coupling caps tested for passing DC voltage. I have yet to find tweed era amp with Astron caps, that were all 100% good. I'd replace them with polyester or polypropylene film caps. SBE or CDE.

Good luck! You have one great piece of Fender history, in that amp. You wouldn't happen to own a 1959 Sunburst Strat?

:)

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm glad I found this forum. I've been perusing YouTube and watching loads of videos. I don't want to do anything to mess this up. I've had this amp for 10 years and barely used it. My teenage son had decided he wants to play the electric guitar and that has finally given me the impetus to get it into shape. I'll update as I progress or with new questions.

Thanks again!

Treat it respectfully and give it the routine service it will periodically require and there's absolutely no reason why it wouldn't last another fifty years (or more).

Best of luck

you have an amp worth a lot of money, make sure the correct fuse is in it.

Some old amps have too powerful fuse in it and amp is not protected
Amp need a 2 amp fast blow fuse.

Have a look t your 3 prong power cable, look wrong;

Do some research and find a good, reputable tech. The amp is worth it. I'd also completely bypass that ground switch.
