"Looks like it might be a 5u4."

Yeah, looks like a nice, old US made 5U4G. Very reliable tubes, but need to check output tube bias --- as the B+ voltage maybe lower than a healthy 5U4GB or 5AR4.

Very groovy looking coke bottle.

The rectifier tube is a 5Y3.

Awesome! I haven't seen a coke bottle 5Y3G in years. Even lower B+ and more sag than a 5U4G.

:)

I replaced most the electrolitics except forgot the bias cap. I foolishly broke and replaced one resistor. Powered the amp up and hum is gone. Nice and quite. Tone is good even with the wizzer cone speaker.

Reverb works but changes the tone to reverb in a can sound. Tremelo works but lacks intensity.

You have access to a tube tester? Sounds like the 12AT7 (V3) reverb driver and 12AX7 (V4) reverb return tubes maybe weak. As well as the 12AX7 (V5) tremolo tube.

Clean and tighten all connections (including the ones to the reverb tank) --- may help. May need new cables to that tank.

Good luck! A worthy amp to restore to full potential and reliability!

I do have a tube tester. A Hickok 547. The 12AX7's were slow to move the needle but eventually came up past minimum GM. The 12AT7's seemed fine. I still haven't figured out if the tube tester is giving me valuable information. I also swapped out with new tubes and compared. The tubes seem ok. I previously tightened and cleaned all the tube sockets.

I did find I was getting a bad connection with a reverb cable. Resoldered and reverb seems to be working well.

Tremelolo is working but intensity is weak, even with tube swaps.

I changed out the bias cap and the sound of the amp went to sh#t! Like the sound of a bad speaker. I put a 25mf/50v in as specified. The old cap was the same value but measured about 42mf. I'm going to try putting in a 47mf/50v and hope the beautiful tone comes back.

Thanks for all your words of encouragement and wisdom!

Try a 100mfd/100VDC rated lytic cap, in the bias supply. It is solid-state rectified (half-wave), so you can use more filtering with a higher voltage rating (for longer life and compensate for higher outlet voltages).

Be sure to readjust the output tube bias, after all of the PSU and bias filter cap changes.

I've made progress with amp. It does sound good! It's still on the bench until I get the tremolo intensity resolved. I tested it with the wizzer cone speaker and a new cannabis rex that I got for my 73 DR. I'm not finding any love for the wizzer. It's buzzes on the low strings. I tried doping the cone perimeter and around the repair area, but not much improvement. I'm ready to ditch the speaker.

I tried the speaker attenuator. I'm not finding any love for it either. It sounds like a fuzz box with no volume or fullness. I think the amp sounds much better with the amp straight to the speaker.

I ordered a new optocoupler for trem. Hopefully that will solve the weak intensity. I'm replacing the reverb cables and going to put in the 100mf/110v F&T bias cap. Now I'm off speaker shopping!

Unless you're gonna search for a vintage model, the Weber 12a or 12f150 is a pretty solid replacement.

Thanks! I ordered the 12f150 50watt today. It sounded like a safe bet.

Good choice.

Give it forty or fifty hours of *vigorous* play then you'll start to hear some real magic.

I installed a new opto-coupler for the tremolo. Problem solved. Everything is working properly now. I expect the 12F150 today or tomorrow. Then I can put the amp back together. I'm still undecided about the attenuator. Not sure if I should keep it on the amp or not.

The amp is back together now and all is working well. Attached are pics of the chassis before going back in the cabinet.
