I got my hands on a 1964 Deluxe reverb in alligator skin. Is the skin aftermarket or could it have been done custom at the factory? It also has a black box mounted in back which appears to be a speaker attenuator. Would this be an aftermarket mod too?

The attenuator is absolutely a modification.
I won't say that the alligator tolex is positively a mod, but it most likely is. I don't think Fender did anything like that until the Custom Shop started up under FMIC.

Surely a MOD or re-creation, possibly not even a legit BFDR. Got any pics?

I'd like to see pics of *everything*......the interior of the cab, the chassis (including under the doghouse), the speaker, the whole load.

I'm not sure if this will work. Not easy posting pics here.

What is it with Deluxe Reverbs and attenuators? Then clipping the bright cap ?

Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. 22 watts IMO isn't all that loud. And rolling back the treble and bass to accentuate mids does the same to the tone stack as clipping the bright cap.

perplexes me.

Ya, the forum software requires a file extension to use the IMG tags.
Personally, I use Imgur, as it allows for a direct link to the JPG and is (for now) still free.

That is definitely some kind of attenuator, the wires go to the speaker jack and to the speaker. Hopefully it is a proper L-Pad and rated to handle the wattage from that amp.

The front panel reads "FEIC", there's no shelf on the baffle board for the logo, the knobs are snowman types -- the amp could very well be a 1964 model. Tranny numbers may confirm that. However, the speaker does not appear to be original.

The covering and grill cloth, while atrocious looking, were competently done and somebody took the time to install corner protectors at the bottom of the cabinet. Cosmetically, it's perfect for someone whose style runs to checkered pants, penny loafers, and argyle socks.

Here are pics of the cabinet. I did discover the covering is an embroidered leather.

Pics of the speaker. I'm sure I'll get a lot of feedback on this one...no pun intended.

Like this amp?

Wanna keep the original trannies safe?

If so, get those leaky electrolytics replaced. ALL OF THEM! That's the filter array, the cathode-bypass caps, and the bias-supply cap. Recommend F&T's but Sprague's will do.

And for God's sake, ditch that POFS speaker. Look for a vintage Jensen -- either a C12Q, C12NA, or a Concert Series EM1200.

Yes of course, I will be replacing all the electrolitics. I ordered F&T's for the 16 uf filter caps and Spragues for the rest.

I'll be testing the speaker first before I decide to ditch.

Nice 64 BFDR, looked at all your pics almost all original. Thanks and great find.
What rectifier tube is that? looks like it might be a 5u4, hard to say from just the top view.
That gator skin doesn't look bad on the outside, someone got staple happy on the inside though.
I would probably ditch that attenuator, hopefully it wasn't used because of an incorrect speaker ohm rating or a mod to get that effect. If the speaker is 8 Ohms, it might just need a re-cone or a fresh doping. I couldn't read the maker marks but the speaker basket looked like it was beefy enough.
Nice amp, do everything Arjay suggests and it will last another 64 years.

Posting pics from Flickr,
open a forum post and flickr (two windows)
left click the pic you want to post
@ the bottom right are three icons, left click the swirl arrow icon
I use the BBC code and choose the pic size you want
highlight & copy the BBC code
in the forum post or reply, left click the IMG box
paste the BBC code between the two [img]HERE[img]
preview your post & submit when it shows pictures

As a side note, Flickr adds more info in the BBC code than is really necessary. It can be truncated as long as you keep the portion required that starts w/ http:/ and is the short filename and ends w/ .jpg
