I had an issue where the seller never did ship an amp I purchased on Reverb. (I now know, this person is no dummy and knows the ins and outs of scamming by way of dragging things out to his benefit) Through the Reverb.com so called "refund process" his e-check bounced for the refund. Reverb will now not get involved if the seller accepts PayPal only - hung out to dry. I now have to go through PayPal, which takes plenty of time to get your cash back. Give them 10 days to respond, bla-bla-bla.

Just a heads up. Not everyone's honest and Reverb doesn't have the buyer protection like the Bay does.

Everybody seems to think PayPal is so secure and mistake-proof.
It is not.
PayPal themselves screwed me out of $108.35 about 7 or 8 years ago.
When I provided proof of what they had done and appealed their decision they denied my appeal and summarily closed my account.
I will never use them again for as long as I live.
As far as I am concerned they are crooks.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm sorry for you.

Could it be that the amplifier was left at your door outside by the delivery company and that it was stolen ?

It has already been seen but for small parcels bought at Amazon

And Never ever do the "Gift" method on Pay Pal... !! No matter what the seller says!!!!! no refunds period with that.

Reverb isn't safe at all either... The last amp I bought on Reverb was by a seller in Chicago. Then a few days later someone goes on a shopping spree with my credit card and guess where???? Chicago! Of course, the credit card company caught it and I didn't pay a dime. (still a hassle though)

When I buy something used it's now through Guitar Center Used Gear web site. There is no Risk, I have the gear shipped to the store nearest me, when it shows up I inspect it, if it's not what its supposed to be.. I don't buy it. The store packs it up and ships it back to the store it came from.

Then the prices on Reverb? Some of those Sellars are smoking something... And Craigs list? meh.....

I have not used these PayPal, Ebay methods of payment before, and in view of the comments 'Beware of PayPal',Reverb etc., I will try and avoid the lot of them in view of this.
Do problems and risks apply in the reverse if I was selling an item to an individual or retailer?
I was thinking of selling some musical stuff via the web, but maybe I should sell direct by cash transaction, and 'face to face' with local buyers despite the much lesser access to the buyers market and possibly lower selling prices.
Any comments or advice?

I have to say over the last couple years of using PayPal w/ over 100 buying transactions on E-Bay, I've never had a bad incident. I did have a seller on Ebay, sell an item twice though and it was shipped to the other guy but I got a refund. It's always best to buy in person, see it- feel it- buy it if its what you want but that's not always possible or convenient.
Sure stuff happens, especially imo w/ deliveries going to the wrong house in my case(not a good feeling, receiving the message package delivered and your at home waiting for it to arrive).
There are also plenty of folks waiting to rip you off, buy from sellers w/ lots of transactions and high % of happy customers.
I switched to using PP because of CC fraud at Amazon, three times w/in 6 months.

I've never had an issue with either payment method but I've had Life Lock protection for close to fifteen years now and nobody's laid a financial finger on me yet.

If it's worth having, it's worth protecting.

Fortunately it was a USAA card and they were quick to catch it, just ended up being a major inconvenience to replace the card three times. All the perps were from the Dallas area shopping at wallyworld, card makers w/ good numbers on file making a $1 purchase then followed by gift card purchases.
