Hi,

I have recently acquired a 1971 Twin Reverb which to my ears sounded great as soon as I got it. I had a look inside recently and it has definitely been well serviced by a previous owner. All usual bits done e.g. filter caps replaced (as well as one ugly mod which I have reverted). It has been completely recapped too with orange drops of some kind.

A friend of mine has a Twin Reverb chassis (mid-late 70s) which would take some serious work to get up and running and has kindly said I could take the original caps from it for mine to keep it period correct/potentially sound better.

I'm in two minds about this and would like some advice. My first question is are these the correct caps for 1971? They are the blue moulded kind but I have seen photos of brown caps in early silverface Fenders. If so then that would probably be good enough reason for me to go ahead with the swap. But then a part of me says that these newer caps will surely be more reliable and there really is no point doing the job if all is working well.

Advice welcome!

I didn't view your pictures but if it sounds good it is good.
There were many different colors/types in the SF era of amps, modern orange drops are suitable replacements for all of them. If your offered BF era blue tubular caps, ehh try them if they test good and go with your EAR.

Personally, I'd go with modern 716P SBE or CDE polyester film caps, if you need to replace coupling caps. They will give you good service for a long, long time.

NOS Mallory brown caps or Sprague Orange Drops are getting hard to find. They are very good caps, but I'm not sure if they are worth some of the boutique prices, they now command. If you are set on trying some of these NOS caps, go for real 600VDC rated 6PS Sprague or 600VDC PVC6 Mallory caps
