About a year ago my father gave me his Twin Reverb that he purchased in South Africa around 1965. I was having some issues with it recently so I took it to an amp repair shop. The tech told me that there is a broken solder connection, the caps are shot, a reverb spring is broken, and the speakers are pretty much shot too.

I had him do everything but the speakers because I am unsure of what put in. My goal is to keep the amp sounding as close to original as possible without breaking my bank account. I was wondering if someone here would be able to give me a couple of suggestions.

Thanks.

What speakers are in it? What does "shot" actually mean?
Could be candidates for a re-cone.
A picture or two (front/back)would be excellent.

A 12-inch speaker can be re-coned for as little as $75 and that *might* make economic sense. The OEM speaker for a 1964 Twin Reverb would likely be Oxford's 12T6 (the same driver that Fender used in Bassmans of that era). Pre-1966 Oxfords didn't sound too bad though they never equaled the tone and timbre of Jensen's C12N (another often-installed speaker used periodically by Fender). Regardless, a Twin Reverb needs a speaker with a minimum power-handling capability of fifty watts (75 would be better). Eminence, Weber, and Reverend all offer suitable replacements that will preserve and showcase the amp's legendary tone.

If one can't get a hold of the Oxfords 12T6, or Chicago Jensen C12N C8220s or the C6969s (all three are outstanding vintage speakers)

IMHO... The Italian Sica/Jensen Ri C12N IMO is probably the best substitute for vintage Oxfords or Chicago Jensens. That said I've tried the Webers 12F150s, WGS G12C & Jupiters

IMO the Italian Sica/Jensens sound the most vintage in a Twin.

Unknown to many Sica/Jensen Ri C12N actually are extremely close to a vintage C12N C6969 (having re-coned both I've posted my finding on the web) Having gigged a Twin for a Decade and a half, mostly with a pair of early 2000 Sica/Jensen Ri C12ns .. they do mellow with age (like the originals )

It's a case of "right speaker for the right amp" the 3 band tone stack of a Twin allows you to dial up the mids till any top end treble bite disappears. That's when the magic happens with Sica/Jensen Ri C12n One doesn't get the same result with a Weber 12F150 or a WGS G12C or the almost equivalent Jupiter 12LC... (ala a WGS G12C with a smaller magnet and shorter former/less powerful voice coil)

You ever heard this amp, with original speakers? If it was good, maybe going the re-cone route is best. For maintaining original tone and parts.

Have any photos? :)
