Hi there,

First time posting here and was looking for some advice. I just bought a Fender tweed deluxe 5c3 1953. Everything cools and sounds great to me. After further research, I realized that the on/off switch is part of the tone knob. Reading online it seems that this is something you'd typically find on a 5b3 and not the 5c3. 5c3 being the model that introduced the on/off switch. Do I just have an early model/transitional amp (52-53) or is this a 5b3 amp in the body of a 5c3? The tube chart and speaker say 1953.

Thanks so much!

Jam.

You are correct, it is a 5B3. The Model 5C3 has a separate On/Off toggle switch, along with an external speaker jack under the chassis, glass tubes, and a negative feedback loop.

Thanks for your reply!

The tube chart is stamped 5c3 and the serial number matches that stamped on the amp chassis. However, there is no external speaker jack. Very strange.

Sounds to me like you have both, a wide panel cabinet(5c3) and TV chassis(5b3). They also started serial numbers in 1953, so if yours is unnumbered its likely as you thought late 52 or very early 53. Leo wouldn't waste or modify what was already built.

Hi there - The tube chart code dates the amp April '53 and the speaker code dates the 10th week of '53.

I just want to make sure this amp is legit and not two stuck together somehow. It seems there are no mods or changes so I think it's all good.

"CD" = April 1953. Looks like yours does NOT have the separate ON/OFF toggle switch. And prolly has the global negative feedback 1-meg ohm resistor. Check for this resistor near the speaker jack or laying length-wise on the edge of the circuit board.

Thanks so much for your help! The no on/off switch was what got me to look for help here. The wire from speaker goes under the circuit board. I don't see a 1 meg resister directly attached unlike the 5c3 schematic. Here's a photo -

Sweet looking Deluxe.
I would probably update to a three prong grounded power cord and leave the rest as stock as possible. A pick of the power and output transformer would be nice, are they original?

Very nice original Triad's.
I'm really jealous of the great graphics on your chassis.
That was very well taken care of over its lifetime.

Edit: I use a (brown box) bucking transformer to get a lower input AC. There is a good post by Mud(use the search in this sub-forum) if you were inclined to build one on the cheap for yourself. I think it will help preserve the original components and sound more like Leo intended it to sound.

Thanks so much for all this help! It's been incredibly helpful to say the least. Very happy with this amp. Time to reduce/regulate the AC....

You definitely have some kind of odd in-between 5B3 and 5C3 modified circuit. The feedback setup seems to have been changed from 1-meg ohm + 1-meg ohm divide to a 6800 ohm + 2500 ohm divide. And by the looks of the resistors used, it looks like Fender did this on the assembly line.

5C3 layout:

You certainly have a nice specimen, there. Triad made great transformers, in those days. And a very nice Jensen speaker. Worthy of a quality recone, if needed. New electrolytic main power supply caps would be nice, if you are going to be using this amp. And who wouldn't want to play this tone king?

:)
