so I'm lucky enough to be the owner of a blackface twin. it's not an original one, but a beat up silverface that was rebuilt to 65 blackface specs. I got a great deal on it, and the amp is great, but....

its too dang loud. I was reading about a mod where you remove 2 of the power tubes, disconnect one of the speakers, and re-bias to allow you to hit that sweet spot. seems easy to do, and easy to reverse. has anyone done this? any feedback on whether this is a good idea? your thoughts please.

My immediate thought is, you bought the wrong damn amp.

Trade it in on a vintage Pro Reverb.

don't get me wrong- I do love this amp, and I knew it was loud when I bought it. not for sale-I got it for 800 bucks, and I do have an allen accomplice jr. for gigging.

I probably bought it for the wrong reason. I was 11 years old in 65, and wanted one so bad when I saw it at the place I took my lessons. dad nixed the idea, and told me to buy it some day with my own money. it happened last years-52 years later. it is a beaut though.

I hear you.
Living in a condo and I don't gig... I have absolutely no use for anything over 10-20w, but I'd love to have something in the 40w class.

I got over my desire for a Twin after playing a few in '79... Classic Fenders are indeed loud... and clean.
Eventually, I'll probably buy a Super Sonic, or maybe an Eggnater Rebel20.

As Commander Spock once observed, "Wanting is not the same as having".

I'll say it again......you bought the wrong amp.

He was not 16 when he bought it... He was 16 when he began to want it. He did not buy it until he was 63.

I have to admire his tenacity though. If I were to buy the car that I fell in love with when I was 11, it would cost me over $100,000

+1

My restored '69 Chevelle SS396 coupe (MSRP around $4500 when new) is worth over $45K now.

When I was 16, I lusted after a De Thomaso Pantera, and a Super Reverb. I don't have either.

I'd be more inclined to go with an attenuator for a twin reverb instead of subjecting the O.T. to weirdness.

Or I'd sell it for something I could actually achieve speaker breakup with before it was too loud.

Like a Bandmaster Reverb, though even a 40 watt amp is probably too loud.

Right now, I have an itch to build a kit, but I haven't decided what yet. Maybe a reverb unit for my '61 6G2 porch weasel.

If I had a TR, I'd convert it to a monster REVERB unit...
Wanting to find an original Reverb also on the cheap, as unlikely as it seems anymore.

I'm in a lucky spot. kids are grown, no bills, almost retired. this is the first thing I bought that was probably an impulse purchase. 800 bucks won't break me, and I can still enjoy the amp-just can't crank it up. it won't get as much use as my accomplice, but in my mind it is a small price to pay for something from my youth. I still do smile every time I play thru it, and the best part is that my wife and I have different days off from work, so I do get the chance to raise a little hell!

Removing two power tubes only limits maximum power. It doesn't effectively quiet the amp.
There are two approaches you need to work on. External and internal treatments.
Externally, you set a rug in front of the amp to dampen floor resonances. Then get a box a little larger than the amp. Line it with foam and set it behind to absorb rear sound. Then put a 4 inch pad of foam inside the speaker grill cloth in front of the speaker. This reduces the treble beaminess.
Internally, you need to reduce the gain structure. This is normally done by installing some low gain preamp tubes, such as 12at7 or 12au7 in a few spots.
The method I prefer is to adjust the gain of the main stage by lowering the value of the feedback resistor. In a SF amp, its probably 56k ohms. I would lower it to the BF value of 820 ohms. As well as taming the punch, it lowers hiss as well
