Was gifted a 78 Princeton which I think will replace the original speaker. I have a 68 Princeton which had a 30w speaker upgrade from the previous owner which is louder, warmer and has more mid range but would fart out on the bottom notes. I could put that speaker in the 78 but would like something that has more dynamic range etc. So any opinions what would be good for the 78?

There' a lot of great 10-inch speakers, both modern and vintage. For the former, Celestion's Alnico Gold, Eminence's Copperhead or their Ragin' Cajun. My choice for the latter would be a CTS alnico from a Super Reverb or a Chicago-made Jensen C10N.

I've installed a lot of Weber's (both ceramic and rare earth) in many of my clients' amps. Generally they work well and sound quite similar to a vintage Jensen but I've never used them myself. Personally I prefer "real" Jensens and since I'm in a position to afford them, cost is not a consideration. But the Weber is a viable and worthy option which you might consider. A ribbed cone with light doping should assure the best bass response.

Thanks again Arjay Answered my question about doping in the process!

Here's photo with Weber 10-inch alnico, in PR. This is a very nice speaker. :)

30w? How does it handle crashing bass?

Not sure what "crashing bass" is... but sounds a lot better than the OEM Oxford 10L5. Esp at volume.

BTW... I believe this is a "20-watt" Weber. I bought it, in the 1990s. Back before they were making 10A125 and -150s. It was designated Weber VST P10N.

Crashing bass - "playing with a fair degree of vigorous intention or heavy handed ness esp on the bass E string." I'm going to press the 78 into service for small gigs and retire the 68 for a while so wanting to find a speaker that's louder than the standard and will handle the wattage, so the valves are breaking up not the speaker farting out etc. my brother put a modern ribbed 50w weber into a Princeton with good results

For your needs, I'd look for a HD ceramic magnet 10-inch. Much better bass, than the comparable alnico magnet type. Usually, much better efficiency. I'd look for a nice Weber 10F125 or 150.

I have no ceramic aftermarket speakers in any of my Princeton or PR amps. But, I use the 8F150 in my Champ and VC amps. Very good speaker.

Crashing bass aside, I have to agree with Arjay on this one, a nice vintage Alnico CTS speaker in a Princeton (Dec '64) is one toneful choice!

Dunno about "crashing bass" with the Jensen alnico... unless it's equal to creamy, smooth overdrive. :)
Gonna be hard to get thunderous bass out of a 10-inch speaker. Maybe, a 2 x 12 inch cab is better?

A pair of twelves or a single fifteen will let that Princeton BREATHE.

What's wrong with one of these?

Current bid on fleabay $95. That's about AU$125. Don't know what the import duty is, but you got the amp for free, and there would be no chance of "farting out". 98dB efficiency.

Think of it as an investment.

Cheers

Prob look locally first. The 50w Weber interests me though. I'm going to experiment running the 78 through one of the pro speakers also but live I just want a plug and play setup that's at least as loud as the other princeton with some improvements dynamically.
