Finally! A use for all my old business cards. I just need about a hundred speakers to recone.

Seriously, thanks for sharing that vid.

Again late for the party, but that is exactly the way I do it, using masking tape and business cards, for some types of speakers I have jigs to set the height and gap, and than onto the signal test the same way with my signal generator. I had learned how to do this when I was working with a major touring sound company, and at one point I was the only N.E. USA re-cone authorized person for Apogee speakersImage

I did one Fender JBL and swore that was no good way for me to make any money.
The first cone came in with shipping damage. The time spent wasn't fun or profitable. The worry of just a little too much glue dripping into the coil and junking the thing was worst. Then the metal dust cap shorted the voice coil wires. The instructions are for paper dust caps. The mounting style for the spider wires is different for metal caps, but I had already glued them down.
So I let the experts do my recones. It is a talent outside of my electronic skills and comfort zone.

When I got all my 15-inch home stereo speakers redone, I got to talk to the amp tech (Speaker Repair Pro) a LONG time. Like 30 minutes on the phone and a good hour at his shop. really nice guy.

He said he gets a lot of semi-fixed or semi-ruined JBL recone jobs, both home stereo and studio pro lines. Ppl who can redo Jensen, EV, even Altec speakers can have a difficult time with JBL. Their tolerances are tighter than most others. Anyhow he did a great job!

When the foam surround dry rots I carefully cut the dust cover place shims in the gap and replace the surround, take the shims out and carefully glue the same dust cover back on

Now you all are scaring me off!
I had decided to try repairing a K130 myself, but maybe not. Others said, "it's a piece of cake", "nothing to it", oh well, maybe I'll still try, I'll only be out the price of the cone kit.

Think you'll be okay. Take your time. The Simply Speakers video is one of the best DIY I've seen.

It's pretty simple arts and crafts, just follow the video, it is spot on. The only suggestion I can make is... if you have trouble removing the old glue from the basket, I use Methyl Ethyl Kentone (MEK) but acetone will work with a little more elbow grease, ( gloves, ventilation or do this outside )
Give it a go as you said the only loss will be the kit and if you own 2 K130's order 2 in-case you make a mistake, and if you don't you will have a kit ready to go for the future

That is the easier kit as you don't have to set voice coil height, not to much more cash and less to have to think about. Basically just shim, add glue and drop it in, solder

I'm not familiar with this company but one thing I'm CERTAIN of, the JBL K130 most assuredly did not feature a ribbed cone......

http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/k_series.pdf

Just as with the earlier series speakers, only Lansing's bass drivers used the ribbed diaphragm (D140F, E140, and K140).

I didn't doubt you for a second, Arjay, and the 2 K130's I have are also smooth, so I e-mailed the company.

"The ribbed is the 140 sorry we will have to change the wording. All of the 130's are smooth cones."
