I took a run at replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors on my 1965 Bandmaster. The head was pretty much original..so I was torn about going in as a relative neophyte to amp repair...but I did it anyway. Total parts were around $90 Canadian...including the F&T (Fischer & Tausche) capacitors and a few resistors. I debated leaving the resistors in as they all looked good...But I did replace a few (hmmmm...)

The dual 25uf+25uf 25V F&Ts are BIG, more than twice the size o f the old Mallory's...so it was a tight squeeze...but all good in the end.

The photos aren't the best...sorry...

Good job! Caps should last another 25 years.

Yeah those dual F&T's are monsters. Usually new production caps are smaller, not in this case. Nice work.

Nice job ,
I alway use two single 25 mfd , 50 volts Mallory caps to replace those dual caps
Half the price and both are smaller than one dual cap

Thanks All.
I thought about ordering four 25uf 25V Sprague TVAs in place of the two 25+25uf 25V F&Ts, but in the end decided to use only F&T... I kind of wanted to keep the same layout as the original. The lower price of four Sprague's would have saved about $9.00. I even pulled out a newer Sprague 25uf 25V that had been installed in the tremolo section when I first got the amp, and put in an F&T 22uf 500V as seen in the photos for the same reason (consistency).

Stratele52...where do you get the Mallory 25uf 50V capacitors? I have seen them on the Newark.com site...but no where else (...and they are dirt cheap on Newark....). Are they "real" Mallory's?

I contacted Mallory in Woodstock, Ontario ...now operating as DuraCap International http://www.duracap.com/ ...DuraCap does not make that style of Capacitor anymore...maybe the ones on Newark are NOS, or maybe part of the CDE empire offerings since they also claim to own the Mallory name???

Anyway...DuraCap (Canada) said they would make their old style TT and TC caps if somebody bothered to order them...but they need an industrial size order.

Now...............when you get bored sometime, you can carefully remove paper from the old ones, cut and re-stuff the aluminum innards with new caps and reinstall the paper.

Thanks Stratele52,
The caps on those websites are CDE Sprague 25uf 50V...not Mallory per se. Those site list CDE manufactured Mallory multi-section Canister type...but not the small axial.

The Newark site http://canada.newark.com/cde-mallory/ska220m050/aluminum-electrolytic-capacitor/dp/92F498 does have some "Obsolete" but In-Stock CDE Mallory 22uf-50V.

Agreed...really debated to leave them in...
I also considered getting some expensive Jensen caps just to get the colour.
The old days cool looking parts ended a long time ago it seems.

The mid-century (1930's) Art-deco style...translated to the parts too...sad.

The General Electric Building, also known as 570 Lexington Avenue, is a historic 50-floor, 640-foot (200 m)-tall, skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the southwest corner of Lexington Avenue and 51st Street).Originally known as the RCA Victor Building when designed in 1931 by John W. Cross of Cross & Cross.

Lobby has the same copper hues and styling as the Alumalytics ....

Even a lonely old G-E incandescent light bulb branch plant factory in Oakville, Ontario (1946) got the Art-Deco treatment.

The Audio DIY Board confirmed that these are good caps. Built to Mallory industrial standards. Good news!
