What's the deal with new tanks? Is it the spring steel that's bad/different? The transducers?

I've tried different brands (2 spring, 3 spring, med decay, long decay, etc.) with builds and most of them sound like crap. I know it's the tanks because I have vintage tanks that sound great in the same amps. I've tried different reverb tubes to calm them down as well. I've got some old organ units that aren't the correct imp. for guitar amps that I may have to pull springs from and replace, maybe even the chassis itself.

Anyone else run into this?

I saw somewhere that the <MOD> reverb tanks have the transducers wired directly to the RCA jacks rather than a clip. Not sure if that helps. I have never purchased or replaced a reverb pan.

Did you remove the foam that is between the tank and shell?

Clips may have less good electrical contact than directly ( solder ?) to the RCA jack.

Clips are often use everywhere with no problem

That's one of those things you only do once, but maybe some of these new tanks would sound better if I left it in. Just like everything else, the days of good Gibbs and Accutronics are long gone. I'd have no problem paying $60-$80 for a quality new reverb tank if it had the tonal effects of the past. Oh and by the way, lets make it here.

When I built my "Twin" clone, I tried several different tanks, a 60's Gibbs, a 3 spring "Belton Accutronics, a modern USA 2 spring Accutronics, and a Mod 2 spring tank. I had a few of my guitar player friends over when testing, and all agreed the Mod sounded the best, (with that amp).
I thought the Gibbs would be better, but maybe they get "tired' after 50 years?
I don't even think about it now, and just get a Mod when I need a tank!

I agree, the best of the whole new production slew are MOD tanks. The AB3C is a bit much but the AB2C works. I wonder how they'd work in a stand alone.

Just to cover all the bases, you got the correct match with the new tanks, impedance, grounding, orientation?

Although I’ve only replaced a half-dozen or so tanks, I haven’t had any problems with the replacement tanks, as long as impedance, orientation and grounding scheme was correct. I use the accutronics chart to be sure everything matches the original. Of course the delay and number/length of springs can be different, which would affect the reverb strength, but not make them sound horrible as long as the other specs are correct.

Not really much about tanks that can be different enough to make them sound bad. :?:

Absolutely. The majority have been the typical Fender 8 ohm/2250ohm. They're just so damn inconsistent. I'm not the only one who has had this issue.

Now, I'm not the guy to judge the quality of tanks by ear, but I have come across a technical problem that I address on just about every tank I replace.
The springs have a ferrite bead on them that is excited by the magnetic field pulling on them from the laminations. The problem is that the stack of laminations is loose in it's mount. The mechanical force that is applied to the bead is equally applied to the lamination stack. So the laminations move instead of the beads.
This reduces the efficiency and accuracy of the tank on the driven end, not so much on the pu end.
The cure is simply to glue the laminations to their mount to stop their uncontrolled movement.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tim I'll try that on a tank today, epoxy or CA should work. I just bought a tank (listed as "for repair") from a '71 Super Reverb that had a broken magnet wire. Tedious work for these old eyes but I replaced it with spares I had from old organ tanks. It sounds much better than these new ones but I'll try your little trick and compare.

Thanks, UN

When I did my refurb on my 69 Super Reverb Basket Case (it was modded into a head only) and I used a 3 spring reverb pan from Mojotone. Very lush sounding and once Arjay helped me out with the suspension system used originally, I was surprised by just how good it sounded. Only one I have done so cant speak to the consistency issue though. Here is the link to one I used.

Thanks for the info T2. Looks like the Mojo tanks are made in the same facility as TAD and Revisit, contemplating ordering one to compare. New production tanks can be obtrusive. Bad for people like me who can't just sort through the pile and find an acceptable one.

Another non-obvious tone issue I ran into was a deluxe reverb that the owner said had a dead sounding reverb.
It was missing the cardboard insert under the tank. I glued a couple narrow strips of cardboard onto a piece the size of the tank. Then I taped it to the tank.
The customer tried it and got this look of wonder and asked is that all it was? Yea, everything makes a difference.
