Hi guys.

I have a rather simple question.

How much can having a vintage guitar "re-finished" or "re-painted" hurt it's value?

My reason for asking is this. My older brother, who has been playing from the age of 15 or 16yrs old, who is now approaching 60, still has his one, & only guitar, a 1959 Fender Telecaster, Sun Burst with a white pick guard, maple neck/fretboard (if I recall 100% correctly), which he never plays anymore. It's been sitting in it's Fender case for quite some time now, untouched, a few years, & I have the chance to get it from him, as he has asked me if I wanted it, of course for a reasonably cheap "brotherly" price, if not free. This of course includes all his gear, a couple vintage 60's/70's pedals, his vintage late 60's early 70's tube amp (if I recall it's a marshall w/ a 12", not sure on output power or model, would have to ask), pretty much everything in the closet. He bought all of it in the late 60's early 70's, & has used it pretty regularly as a time killer when he was in the army in the 70's, & to continue as a hobby up until the last few years, so, he just wants to get rid of it. He did tell me the guitar had been re-painted or re-finished in the mid 70's, not by who, but it was done. Aside from that, it is a bone stock Tele. He did give me the serial numbers off it, which I had checked to verify what it was (can't find the damn paper I had them written on now of course, but I can just as easily call him to get them again). My only concern, is being a fairly old vintage guitar, how much will this re-finishing hurt it's value? If I end up buying it, I surely don't wanna over-pay for it, plus, if/when I do get it, I would like to know the effects of having this done. Having see the guitar many, many times, I personally would have never known it was re-finished, but, I guess a professional eye may notice. To me, it looks just like any other Sun Burst finish Tele.

Since I have decided a few years ago to start playing/learning again, I am really intrigued about whether or not I should grab the Tele from him or not. So any advice of any kind would be extremely appreciated. As it sits right now, I do want to grab it from him, but, as my question pertains, I am rather worried about how this "re-finishing" or "re-painting" may have affected any of it's value.

Thanks a ton in advance. It is GREATLY appreciated.

Tony

Bah sorry. If possible could a mod move it please.

Also, thx strat. I will either have to get up to see him, or, see if he can give me pics (which I doubt as he's not the most techy type lol)

A vintage-correct nitro refinish would be 30~40%. But a '70s refinish may be poly -- more like 40~50%.

'60s Marshall combos are quite sought after. That will be a significant part of the purchase.

And some '60s/'70s pedals are insanely valuable. A vintage Uni-Vibe can fetch a grand or more. Tycho Brahe, Dallas Arbiter/Sound City, Roland Space Echo, early MXR -- it's conceivable that the pedals could be worth as much as the guitar.

Even some '60s straps sell for ridiculous amounts of money.

Hmmm...thx stray. Glad to know. I actually told him I wanted just the guitar, but with what you said, I may be best taking it all. Thx.

Just so I don't pump you up too much and then you get let down...

There was a short-lived late '60s Marshall hybrid amp (solid-state preamp, EL84 power tubes) called the Capri that is not sought-after at all. And all-tube models with replaced transformers or mods lose some of their value.

And most '60s and '70s pedals are barely worth what they sold for when they were new.

It's certainly worth getting a specific list and researching what he has. You might hit the jackpot or it might be a bust, but there's a lot of potential.

Well, personally, all I was really after was the guitar. Told him I didn't want the pedals, cables, amp, but, he said it's all or nothing. So, regardless of what the pedals are specifically, or the actual model of the amp, it would actually just be extra stuff to me. If it happens to be worth while, great, if not, well, I got what I was wanting anyway :) Living in an apartment, that big old tube amp of his is WAY to much to be playing here anyway lol. Neighbors would love me. So at any rate, we shall see I guess. Will try to update when I either get more info, or get the gear.

Thx again.

Yes all could be a good deal for you and him.

It is ok if your brother can't send picture, but he can tell you witch Marshall it is and pedals name model.
You can sell by yourself what you don't need and make some money :)

Without that we can't help you more :?
