Hello,
I decided to share my (fabulous) experience with my Super Reverb.
It has the cosmetic of a 72 ( logo with tail, no master), but I can read 73 on the serial on the 4 original CTS alnico.
So 72, 73 ? I don't exactly know.
I bought it in 1981 and it was already in poor condition, seems it had been heavily roaded.
Two weeks after that the amp was mute, no sound at all and I had it serviced for the first time.
All the tubes were changed for Sylvania tubes.
I wasn't very satisfied with the sound, to bright, a bit harsh , I always had the need of using a compressor.
But it was my first Fender amp and I kept it.
To make a long story short, I started to play blues, I started to gig, but my SR wasn't pleasing my my hear at all.
It was to load , even at 1, always bright and harsh and I decided to BF it.
The tec told me it was a poor amp, noway, even it was blackfaced.
But I didn't give it away.
It had been serviced several time since then and lately it had become unplayable:
Always to load, always to harsh and with a distorted sound at 2 (with all new tubes).
I bought a brand new 68 custom Twin Reverb , keeping the SR (never know...) and Bam !! I discovered a new world !
If that was the real Fender sound, I had been missing it for more than 30 years !! (even with my hot rod deluxe).
I decided to give the SR a last chance, I found I young new tec ( maybe the fourth one), and waited two weeks.
The SR came back...and it was another amp.
It had become a real dream amp, with the best clean I never heard with what ever guitar you plugged in it.
It is easy to set, you have immediately a wonderful sound without spending time messing with the EQ and without any pedal.
So it's thru, find a old SR, have it serviced and you will have a wonder at home. But you really need to find the right tec, if you don't want to wait 37 years to hear the real voice of your amp...

+1

Mine is a '69 Silverface. It has truly risen from the ashes. Has the best clean sound I've ever heard, and with the right pedals, it can go into Marshall territory. For some reason I have always gravitated to the sound of a 4/10 cabinet. It just feels so right.

Did your new tech give you a written description of the work he did? I'm curious what was wrong with it.

Bluelago write ;

The amp year is the year of the newest parts , it is a 73 amp.
What is the number of the transformer ? This will say more

Yes, the transformer, speakers (if original) have date stamps & can verify amp's birthdate. Plus, the chassis number on upper right corner.

Thanks for the answer,

I have a photo of what my tec changed when servicing:
Image

I also have the list of what he did but it is in Italian, and a bit technical but I can try to traduce it:
N°1 5u4gb tube
2 electrolytic capacitors f&t 100uF 350V
3 electrolytic capacitors f&t 22uF 500V
changed all capacitors of the cathode group
changed resistors of the capacitors box
changed resistors of the screen grid
The bias balance circuit his now as it was originally .
Changed Bias capacitor
Correct input wiring
Correct bright wiring
Fixed Cathode group V1
new 12ax7wa on V2

That made the amp reborn.

I'll make some photos tomorrow, it's to dark know.
But here it is beside the 68 custom during my last gig:

Looks like he changed everything that needed to be replaced. Very nice looking Les Paul. Is that a Telecaster, in the foreground?

You should have years of good life with that Super Reverb.

:)

Yes! from Paris, sold by Marcel Dadi himself (a fantastic french finger picking guitarist, Certified Guitar Player by Chet Atkins, who sadly died in the crash of the flight TWA 800 in 1996) in his store for 1400 FF in 1981.
The amp was originally sold by Victor Flore.
At this time the cabinet was heavily damaged and even disjointed, the tolex is not original at all as I decided to change it myself and have the amp restored 20 years ago.
You can see the red voltage selector that seems to be the signature of an export SR.
