I removed the output tubes on my 64 Bassman AA864 without noting their orientation. I'm ready to reassemble - does it matter which holes the pins go into? There isn't anything preventing me from installing them in any particular orientation.

There are a pins guide on each tube unless it is broken when you remove them. :(

Don't plug them until you don't know what you are doing.
Post pictures of pins under each tube

Yea, don't stick them in any which way. It sounds like the plastic octal key is broken out of the center of the tube. You can see the broken plastic on the bottom. If you look closely at the ring of broken plastic in the center, you can see one little part of the keyway sticking out a little further. This key matches the slot in the hole in the middle of the socket on the amp.
Use a silver Sharpie to mark the key on the side of the tube. This allows you to align the key and the slot properly. Damage can occur to the amp if the pins aren't aligned. The key must match with the slot
hint: If the octal keys are both broken out, they are probably old and worn. Consider replacing them.

First post delay strikes again.

He was sitting there ready to stick the tubes back in. And hours later his post still hadn't appeared on the forum. And the next day it still hadn't appeared on the forum.

Hopefully he either googled it, or asked on another forum, and got his answer within minutes or hours.

Or studied his tubes and the sockets while he was waiting for his post to appear on the forum, and noticed the keyways and figured it out on his own.
------------------
Broken keyways are a semi-common issue with old tubes. Old phenolic is a bit brittle. Marking the tube base and socket with a Sharpie works well, but for ease and peace of mind there's this product:

"...and got his answer within minutes or hours."

Or not... then kaboom! Hopefully, not NOS RCA blackplates. :(
