My first post! I’ve been reading for awhile though. I just bought a twin reverb advertised as a 68 Blackface. After reading on here, it sounds like all blackfaced were stopped in 67. The amp is blackfaced and has no master volume. How do I tell if it is one, has been blackfaced, or is an earlier year model? Thanks!

After more research, I believe I have a 66 or 67 blackface.

Pictures are appreciated very much.
As far as dating an amplifier goes,
The Fender serial # range
The chassis date stamp, usually next to the power transformer inside the chassis
Use the EIA codes for the major components; power/output/reverb transformer, choke and speaker as well as the Fender part # to confirm originality
The date stamp code (two letter) located on the tube layout chart
The potentiometer date codes
The type and date codes from capacitors
That works for pretty much all Fender amps post 1952/1953.

Hope that helps.

That all makes sense, Snowdogyyz.

Fender and other guitars and gear often go through a transition stage where changes come midstream crossing over from one year to the next. For instance, change of ownership may see a guitar with a neck from one year later with a body from the next year. Same thing with amps where more or less or the same cosmetics and/or innards were/are used. It could amount to something simple as a change with suppliers or a marketing logo.

The Blackface was intended to end in ‘67, but a few got through to ‘68 amongst the newer Silverfaces (and a few Blackfaces returned in ‘81). Once in a while, but not often, a rarity occurs.

There are different circuits amongst Silverfaces, but, reportedly, the Blackfaces of the sixties we are talking about are all similar in their respective groups.

Now ya know.

Thanks, for the reference and post sfceric64.

A few early silverface amps sported blackface circuitry.

ALL silverface Twin Reverbs manufactured prior to May of 1968 were wired to the original AB763 specs. The circuit was then altered to the miserable AC568 revision. Production figures based on correlated serial numbers for model years 1967 (silverface cosmetics first appeared that spring) and 1968 suggest that several hundred AB763 Twin Reverbs were made -- certainly more than "a few".

Thanks everyone! I believe it's a 1967 from what I can tell. The tube label has AB763 on it and the serial number falls in the range of a 67.

Arjay, we've had friction in the past but I missed the hell out of your wit, intelligence, and vast knowledge of Fender vintage gear. Hope you stick around. 8)
