So, I picked up a 1965 Super Reverb, basically for free. Yep, crazy. Lol, anyway, I've replaced the knobs because the chrome piece in the center was missing on every one. I did keep the old ones. I also replaced the speaker harness because someone had cut it and soldered it all over. I also replaced the grill cloth because this same person decided to spray paint a design on it. I felt all of those things were necessary. What I'm not sure of is if replacing the tolex as well as re-chroming all of the hardware is good or bad for the value. It's not terrible but shows normal wear and tear. I would assume I should leave it as is. All input is welcome!

Do not replace tolex , the value will drop

Chrome hardware can be replaced, not re-chromed, you can buy new one but keep the old one, to put back .

You look to bea beginner in vintage, read and ask before doing something wrong.

Photo may help

The hardware is not chrome -- most of it is nickel. Repro handles and chassis straps are available from Fender but the steel corner protectors and sphinx glides are not -- you'll need to source those from Ernie Ball.

Keep your original tilt-back legs: these are instantly differentiated from contemporary parts by their "PATENT PENDING" inscription and (usually) a stamped serial number on one of them.

Original snowman knobs (used from 1963 through 1968) are worth upwards of forty dollars apiece so someone flushed a substantial sum of money down the toilet when they destroyed those knobs.

Tragic that someone felt compelled to ruin the original grill cloth. The new material that's sold by Fender and others is incorrect in both color and weave size. The "aged white" material sold by Rodgers Amps is an adequate substitute.

Re-tolexing a cabinet is quite the feat and unless you have experience in such procedures you might enlist the help of a professional. Allow no spray-on adhesives or those that are water-soluble. DAP contact cement in the red-labeled can is the best available, being quite similar to the horse-hide glue originally specified by Fender cabinet shop supervisor Sam Hutton.
