Anybody with real experience changing out this speaker?

It has the original speaker in it. I'm pretty sure that it was never a high quality speaker to begin with, and has seen it's best days by probably a couple decades. So it's time to swap it out. Because of the nature of this amp I don't want to screw around. I just want to put the best speaker I can in it.

That said, the old stock speaker is a very flat cage. Additionally, there is a sizable component, maybe a transistor that hangs down from the chassis that comes millimeters from the stock speaker.

If anyone has real world experience changing out speakers on a 1962 Brown Princeton, I'd love to hear your advice.

Thank you.

Celestion gold use only 4 screws. If your original speaker use 8 screw, Celestion will not fit.

There are no transistor in this amp.

+1

There's also the issue of clearance for the transformer. The amp's original 10J5 Oxford speaker has a relatively dinky magnet structure -- frankly I don't think a Celestion Gold Alnico can be shoehorned in there without major modifications to the amp (ie: a new baffle board with an offset speaker hole). In lieu of the Celestion you might consider one of the Weber 10A125 variants. It'll still deliver the vintage alnico vibe but it'll be a bolt-in swap.

FWIW... the Weber 10A125 fits perfect, in the BF PR. My Weber is 15 years old. Still sound mighty good. :)

Looks like they moved some things around between 62 and whenever that BF is dated. I'll post a pic of the insides of mine tomorrow after work.

Actually the layouts of the 6G2 and the later blackface Princeton Reverb are quite similar, with the addition of two extra tubes and the reverb tranny being the principle differences. It's possible that the brownface Princeton's O/T is closer to the center of the chassis which may account for your clearance issue concerns. A few basic measurements will confirm that one way or the other.

Hey all, I just want to post this incase anyone finds this thread in the future wondering the same thing.

I couldn't stop thinking about how it didn't make sense that that component was so close to the speaker. About 3 years ago it had a replacement grill cloth put on. I started looking inside and I wondered if the baffle could be flipped. So I unscrewed it and sure as **** there were screw holes from where it had been. When the guy put it back together he put the baffle in upside down, and also the speaker. So I put them back in right and there is now all kinds of space for pretty much any speaker.

With the baffle in upside down the speaker was too far left.

So will a Celestion gold fit in a 62 Princeton? Yes.

Before: (That cap can is like half an inch from the speaker)

After: Plenty of space now.

With four screws you are ok for a Celestion

Looks like the clearance issue has been solved.

You may find it wise to dismount the chassis before installing the new speaker......

Unless you already have the Celestion that is just looking for a home, I'd shop around for other options. I really don't think a Celestion is a good speaker for that amp. My first choice would be a JBL, but Eminence has some good 10" offerings too.

I put an Eminence Delta Demon in mine, and it sounded pretty good. I had an old JBL laying around that I had intended to put in it, but it turned out that the glue on the VC had aged out too much, so it was toast.

I have JBL E110-8 speakers in my blonde Tremolux cab. They are heavy (like 12 lbs each). You may need to reinforce the baffle of that PR to use one.

The 6G2 brownface Princeton's baffle board is ½-inch birch ply and should be adequately strong enough to support a JBL D, E, or K ten.
