I was playing my 79 twin reverb, everything was fine then the volume dropped, came back up and then the amp went silent. No pops, loud noises no smell of anything burning. The amp is all original except for the tubes. Anybody have a similar problem or any idea of what could have happened. I'm traking it to a repair man but I would like an idea of what could be wrong.

Thanks,
filerj

Sounds like tubes to me.

Dear Chet,
Thanks for the quick reply, all the tubes are glowing so not sure if that means anything or not, I thought if they were still glowing they would be OK, but I'll have them checked out first,
Thanks again.

If it's not the tubes look at the fuse. Which would be an indication that there may be an issue with the rectifier.

If it's not a tube issue, it might be the power supply since it faded then tried to come back, but obviously didn't have the power.

Edit - Or as Chet said, a rectifier. Good luck.

Thanks Chet and Mike. I pulled the fuse and it's OK. So I'll take it to the local Fender dealer. Hopefully it won't be something serious because I really liked that amp, super clean and handled effects pedals really well. Only problem is it weighs a ton!
Thanks again,
filerj

They are heavy (weightwise) amps, but well worth repairing to keep them sounding good. With the amp being almost thirty years old, it might be good to have it fully checked out for preventive maintenance also. Good luck.

Miami MIke and CA Feathers,
Thanks for the info and advice, it turned out to be a bad tube, but I.m going to have the amp gone over probably a cap job because except for the tubes it's all original.
Thanks again,
filerj

If the tubes are lit it can't be a fuse.
A 77 may be ready for a cap job. I had my 76 done a few years ago. I will save you some headaches later. Glad it was just a tube. In most cases in the old hand wired amps that's all it is or filter caps etc. If it needs service, it's a lot easier and in many cases cheaper on a hand wired amp.
