I can't remember if original 5F1's had spacers on the front of the baffle board like others to keep the grill cloth away from the plywood. Anyone able to shed some light on the matter?

Thanks, UN

Google champ 5F1 baffle

Yes ! 1 1/4 X 1/4

I was surprised to discover that it consists of two parts – one plywood back panel 3/8 inches thick with a 6 3/4 inch hole cut out to mount the 8 inch speaker, with another part (think a picture frame with sides 1 1/4 inches wide) mounted to the front of that first panel.

The grill frame's purpose is to isolate the cloth from the baffle board to prevent it from chafing and to minimize audible buzz.

Absolutely.

Output power makes little difference. The speaker is acoustically-coupled to the baffle board which transforms the entire assembly into a radiating plane. If the grill cloth were not pulled taut across the grill frame it would vibrate against the baffle board and cause an audible buzz. It might not be immediately noticeable when playing live but if the amp were miked in a studio, the noise would be readily apparent on any recording.

Yeah I guess I knew that. I know the furring strips are for vibration. I just built this 5F1 (cab to spec.) and was trying different speakers with a 1/4" baffle without the strips and no grill cloth. That's the only way they would fit correctly. I re-coned an old 8" alnico I had with a 8EV cone and that sounds the best/period correct anyway, at least compared to the two originals I've had access to in the last couple of years. Although I will say that "real" 1/4" Baltic birch with glued furring strips would be plenty sturdy with a 6" or 8" mounted speaker. It must have had something to do with anchoring the mounting screws solid.

Correct.

Absent the grill frame, the cloth lying flat on the baffle board would "sizzle" like the spring assembly on the lower head of a snare drum.
