I would like to know if anyone has the specifications for the speaker mounting baffle panel for a 1970 Fender Twin Reverb Silver Face. I need to know what material was used (i.e. particle board, MDF, plywood, etc.), thickness, width and height dimensions, and the specifications for any trim such as 1/4 inch thick trim strips around the front face to offset the grille cloth and provide for mounting/attaching of the Fender Logo. I purchased this amp recently and someone replaced the baffle board it was obviously done wrong. It does not have the correct recess from the cabinet when attached. I would also like confirmation of the correct grille cloth used for this amp. As I recall, it used the silver, black, and blue weave Fender grille cloth. Thanks for your help.

You need ½" MDF, 24½" wide by 16½" tall. The grill frame is ¼" pine strip, one inch wide. The triangular logo shelf is also ¼ pine. If the amp was factory-equipped with JBL's a second rectangular logo shelf will be required at the lower right corner of the baffle board. Grill cloth for the 1970 model year was the silver/white/metallic turquoise weave. Here are two typical layouts for Fender baffle boards, the first example done with ½" birch ply......

The upper cloth sample is the correct type for a 1970 Twin Reverb.

You can buy complete repro baffle boards on Ebay (to include the grill cloth) for about $110 plus S&H.

Arjay, you were kind enough to share a tutorial of one of your cabinet builds with me years ago, I think it would be a great sticky for folks needing answers like desago!
Maybe consider posting it? (I saved the photos for my own reference!)

Our host here may take a dim view of my "activities". After all, they are in the business of selling NEW equipment.

+1K Bill! Arjay's builds are some of the best documented ones on here. I would have never even attempted a build had it not been for those builds!

Arjay,

Thank you very much for the helpful information. I noticed that some Twin Reverbs of that era had an additional 1/4" offset strip down the middle of the baffle board also. I don't know if the 1970 had that additional offset strip. Do you know if there is a drawing available somewhere that might provide additional information such as the exact location of the speaker openings on the baffle board as well as the locations and specifications (size, length, and material) for the 16 speaker mounting screws? I would like for the replacement baffle board to be as identical to the original as possible.

Thanks!
Darrell

The center strip you mention was used initially with the blackface editions of the Twin Reverb (1964 through mid 1967) but IIRC was eventually abandoned as a cost-saving measure. It was a ¼" x 1" piece of pine to which a strip of self-adhesive black felt was affixed to prevent chafing against the inner side of the grill cloth. Sorry but I can't help with any drawings. If necessary, take a look at the baffle board of a contemporary blackface Twin Reverb re-issue. The locations for the speaker holes and their placement/spacing are the same as the early silverfaces. As for the speaker studs, these are the correct parts you need......

Image

The shanks of these fasteners are counter-threaded at the head end to anchor them into the baffle board. The retaining nuts are called "keps" and feature an integral star washer to provide additional friction to hold the speakers firmly in place. These screws and the keps are available from Mojotone. The same keps are also used to mount a Fender amp chassis into its cabinet.

A note on speaker mounting. The cabinet should be lying flat on its face as you position the speakers for installation. The retaining keps should be torqued to roughly 25 inch/pounds, about one quarter turn beyond finger-tight. The keps should be tightened sequentially by skipping four positions after the first one is snug. Skip the next four and repeat. Do this until all eight keps are sufficiently tight. This, to avoid warping the speaker frame and causing voice-coil rub.

Well, maybe so, but it only applies to us do it your selfers.
I'm having to rework a cab I got with a Weber kit, nothing fits right. I need to move the grill farther in, center the baffle, redrill the chassis mounting holes, and make a spacer to fill a gap between the chassis and baffle!
I will be looking at my photos for reference!

No, it's a Deluxe Reverb kit I traded for a few years ago. I still changed several components, and when trying to install the chassis, I found everything was wrong. It's better to source everything yourself, rather than a kit!
Moving the baffle further in shouldn't be such a big deal, but I may end up building another if my idea for a spacer, (covered with Tolex), doesn't work out.
It has 3/16" space on the bottom, and 1/4" on top of the baffle to the cabinet front edge.
Image
The chassis opening is slightly over 2", the chassis is 1 3/4". I'm gonna try ripping a wood strip to fill the gap, (we'll see)!

I prefer to start with a knock-down kit and assemble it myself. That way I know that the critical dimensions are correct. Even the ready-made cabs from Mojotone and others often have issues when fitting the chassis. For as long as I've been building, repairing, and restoring Fender enclosures, I can pretty much do it in my sleep now.

Thanks Arjay! Did the logo for the 1970 Twin Reverb have no tail? What would you call the grille cloth for the 1970 Twin Reverb? It's not the turquoise but it's like a white, silver, blue? Mojotone has like three similar grille cloths with blue or Torquoise.

I already showed you the correct Fender grill cloth for 1970.

Good luck finding any -- Mojotone's is totally wrong.
