Can a EVH 5150 iii 100 watt amp use a "Variac" Auto Transformer down to 90 volts?

I believe that is exactly what EVH did with his own amps. Lowering the voltage is a great way to get earlier breakup. As to any detrimental affect to the amp...... ? Of course, EVH didn't have to worry about that. $$$

I know this post is a few years old, not easy to find info about doing this with a 5150iii. So is there no IC chips to worry about? I mean lowering the voltage below an operating level can be hazardous for IC chips and cause serious damage, IF the amp uses any. My question is whether the amp is free of IC chips and whether it can be lowered to 90 volt? Thanks in advance.

Hazardous to operate IC at lower voltage? Not sure how it could be “hazardous”, it would work or it would not. It looks like there are several ICs and other solid state devices in the amp.
