I have an opportunity to grab one of two amps: a VibroChamp XD for prob $175, or a 1975 SF Twin Reverb. He's asking $750 for the twin. The cabinet isn't the best cosmetically, but isnt terrible, but it looks like someone put two screws on each side of the speaker grille instead of fixing the velcro. The tolex has some tears, and the front panel has a few battle scars.

Functionally it seems pretty decent, everything works, but it could prob use some TLC. I think $600 - $650 is more in line with its value, maybe even generous. Opinions?

As far as the VibroChamp, I know nothing about it and haven't had the chance to see or hear it. Are they worthwhile at all?

Easy enough to answer:

The Twin Reverb is one of the finest guitar amps ever made -- known for its quality construction, reliable performance, and overall durability.

The Vibro Champ XD is not.

If it's an Ultralinear TR spend some time at the gym doing deadlifts prior to the purchase.

I can't say the VibroChamp XD has any appeal at all. If I want a lame amp, I already have an early Line 6 Spider 210... So while I am really interested in the Twin, I have to decide how much I *really* want it. I'm going to have to take a closer look at it, hopefully he's willing to let me pull the chassis to see what's under there...

If it's not all hacked up, I might just have to bring it home...

Ask yourself this: Do you *NEED* a 100-watt boat anchor? There are in fact situations where such a beast is called for but they are few and far between now. Mull that question over for a day or two......I'm sure by then a logical answer will become apparent.

It's funny, but that's nearly exactly what I was thinking this evening. I talked to him tonight, and he got kinda funny when I asked if I could see inside the amp chassis. So that pretty much is the end of it, because I got a funny feeling about it.

Thanks for entertaining my momentary insanity. My caps for the Champ should arrive tomorrow, and I'll stick with that for a while; it's fine for my primary venue (the living room).

When you decide you're ready for a larger platform, give some *serious* consideration to a Deluxe Reverb. I think it'll provide everything you could conceivably need and there are thousands of guitarists who would unambiguously agree.
