I finally let go of my 1966 Champ.... it was my first vintage amp, but it had been relegated to sitting under its cover and not getting played. With the addition of the restored 1962 brown Vibrolux - the Champ really wasn't doing much. I still have my 1972 Vibro Champ. But when I want to play a smaller amp, I typically plug into the little 1960 Gibson GA-5 Skylark which has much more bark and bite than the BF Champ. (Think tweed Champ)

So what drove me to such madness? I finally found and bought a 1979 Stratocaster. Why an "undesirable" '79? Because it is the year I graduated high school. I was in a garage band.... we REALLY sucked.... but I had always wanted a Strat back then. (I had a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker back then)

The Strat is heavy, chunky - but its a lot of fun. All original except the tuners....I replaced the non-originals with a nice set of Fender appropriate Schallers. Much different beast than my 1994 American Standard. The neck is chucky like a ball bat... which I love. Being a child of the '70's.... that large headstock always said Fender to me. HaHa

Well... to each his own. Right?

I hope that Champ has gone to a good home. Sure looks to be in nice condition. Is that Strat's body solid ash? Is the tone closer to a Telecaster?

Ha... yeah... I fretted (no pun intended) over selling the Champ for some time. But it was really not getting any attention from me. I hope I'm not hunting down a blackface in a few years. HaHa.

When to a Fender fan that never owned a vintage amp before. He was very excited to get it. Actually the sale was delayed because I was dealing with my mother passing away. (got rid of the amp..... lost my last parent and my last immediate family member in the a 30 day period- my only sibling (brother) died in 1998 from throat cancer). :(

The body is Ash.... my other vintage Fender is a 1974 Telecaster Thinline which I bought in 1983 with my first student loan for Grad School  . The two guitars sound quite different (clearly the humbuckers and semi-hollow body make for the differences). But the 1979 Strat does sound somewhat Tele (comparing it with my 2009 American Special Tele) in nature, but the pick-ups and switching on this particular Strat are quite different. Very hard to explain.....

I have a solid ash Tele. The thing is a twang monster. :D

If you lust after that blackface Champ sound, a few years from now... it's going prolly cost you twice as much to get into the driver's seat.

That's a really nice setup and I'm a bit jealous of the two reverb units in the pic.

Phansford, you should reply w/ a pic of your Vibrolux.

Believe that might be a JBL Creature II multimedia speaker... which very possibly could be able to strongly resonate at certain lower frequencies. :P

phansford, we graduated HS same year - and heck yeah, Strats were the thing particularly if ya were after the Trower sound at the time! That is a gorgeous example you have by the way!

Stoopy is correct... that is my JBL Monster bass speaker sitting under my desk. Gotta listen to some tunes when I'm working. HaHa

Here's the 1962 Vibrolux..... you can see other photos... pre-restoration and post.

This sits in my office with the 1979 Strat.
