One need not be an "amp geek" to know that CBS-era Oxfords sucked. The differences between them and an equivalent year Jensen or CTS is so significant that a deaf person could hear them while whirling around inside an F5 tornado. Ditto with the Utah's.

Yeah, I'm not sure how that term slipped into a guitar amp article in the Schematic Heaven site. But, I copied that part verbatim. When I think of "amp geek," I always think hi-fi folks.

I don't have an issue with the term -- my point is, even musicians whose major focus is actually playing their instrument rather than tinkering with their equipment can tell the difference between a good speaker and a mediocre one.

So, a mid-60s Jensen M1 (C12NS-type) I found on eBay arrive on Friday. I put it in the Twin next to one of the Oxfords, pulled two of the power tubes and went back and forth between the two speakers. Not even close. My wife heard the difference from the other room. Lest I sound like I'm reviewing a wine, I'll save you all of the adjectives. It just sounded better.

I bought a 60s Vibranto on Reverb.com that will be here by the end of the week. I'll do the same experiment. Right now, I have the M1 and a newish C12N in the Twin. I feel like the M1 is compensating for the characteristics that are lacking in the Italian Jensen.

The Vibranto is probably going into my Deluxe Reverb reissue, which is my main gigging amp.

One last thing, I stuck one of the Oxfords in a (sort of) 5E3 I built last summer. (I say sort of, because I put a 40w Fender Pro OT in it to give it more headroom and to allow me to use 6V6 or 6L6 tubes.) Anyway, it sounds pretty good in that amp and takes my overdrive pedals well (a Zendrive and a Wampler Euphoria).

Thanks again.

The 1960s era Jensen (Made in Chicago) C12N seemed to be a good speaker --- esp for amps with clean tone. I can't remember what the "S" in C12NS meant?

"C12NS"?

I'm not aware of one.

However, the C12NA was made exclusively for Fender. The additional identifier probably designates a deviation from Jensen's standard specs, likely some enhancement.

Jensen did produce a C10NS, also exclusive to Fender amps. It's most commonly found in the Vibrolux Reverb (I've never seen them in a Super Reverb).

So, help me out...The guy who listed it said in his description that it was a C12NS-type, but you guys say there was no such thing. It's a gray frame from 1966. The stamp says M1 120 C8512 with a production number of 220644

The one that is on the way is a Jensen Concert EM1250 C8189 2 with a production number of 220534. I believe Arjay told me this one was Vibranto. How about the M1; is it a Vibranto as well.

Thanks much.

I believe it is, though it may pre-date Jensen's formal adoption of the Vibranto name.

It's a really a nice sounding speaker. I just spent a couple of hours with it. Once I got the tone controls dialed in on the amp and my 335, it really came alive - thick but very clear. It really sounds fantastic with my American Tele as well. The seller sent along a Fender MIC/Jensen (Chicago) sticker for the back, which I went ahead and put on, even if it might not be exactly correct - as in the way it originally shipped.

The Vibranto I have coming has the original Jensen Concert Electric Musical Instrument sticker on it.

Thanks again.

Hello all - I'm a relative novice when it comes to vintage Fenders. There's a guy locally selling a NMV SF Twin that I'm wondering if it truly has a BF circuit (I know some of the early SFs did, but some of them didn't but still had the paper saying they did). The schematic paper says it's AB763, but the tube layout does not match what I've read the BF circuit tube layout is. Can anyone help me figure out if it is? Even if it isn't, it seems to be a great price - should I buy it anyway? I can't figure out how to insert images on this forum to show you what he's got (if anyone can tell me how to do that too that'd be great! maybe because they're in .png format?)

Grille cloth has aluminum border; no master volume
Serial number on back plate A 10723
Paper tube schematic says AB763
Power supply 117 volts, power consumption 260 watts
Tube layout (L to R): 6L6GC (4 of them), 12AT7, 12AX7, 7025, 12AT7, 7025, 7025

Thanks a lot, I learn so much from you all every time I get on here!

Chris

Photos of the circuitry will tell if it was modified back to AB763 standards. Does the seller have those? If you could post them, it may help.

The picture you want to post must have an http: address that ends in .jpg
when replying to a message, click the IMG button above the text area and the result will be this--->[img] [img]
Copy and paste the picture address in between the IMG code above.
It should look something like this---> [img]http://1968twinreverb.jpg[img]
Flickr, Imgur and other photo hosting sites are where the address comes from and may be longer than the simple example above.
PREVIEW your post to ensure the photo appears at it should, usually these sites offer a BBC code for uploading and downloading photos and that seems to be the easiest way here on the forums. Some minor adjusting may be required on your part to get it right. Medium size photos are usually best. If you get it close, we can help get it right.
Photos of the circuit are the only way to confirm whether you amp is BF or SF specs.
